Subaru has clearly been busy! This Legacy is one of three new models on offer - including the Impreza STi and a 2.5-litre turbo Forester - and it brings a manual box to the range-topping 3.0R.

Previously only available in auto form, its aim is to give the executive a sportier feel. The Spec B also offers lower, firmer suspension with Bilstein dampers and larger wheels, shod with 215/45 R18 tyres. The interior trim features shiny aluminium-effect inserts and black leather seats which have near-Audi quality. You couldn't have said that of a Subaru a year or so ago.

This car is a true rival for Audi's A4 3.2 quattro and BMW's 330i. The flat-six engine has a wonderful spread of torque and revs keenly to 7,000rpm, and the six-speed gearbox, a strengthened and refined Impreza unit, is smooth, making the most of the power. Taut suspension and great grip from the 4WD transmission give sure-footed handling.

Any downsides? Well, the estate version's ride is a little choppy, and a steering damper deprives the wheel of feel, while a vague clutch pedal thwarts smooth gearchanges. The instruments are hard to read in overcast conditions when the lights are on, but that's about it.
