Having recreated one of the most evocative cars of all-time, Ford has every right to be proud of its new GT, but Renault has a new model wearing the same badge... albeit with a different target market in mind.

Replacing the Dynamique Techno in the Laguna line-up, the new GT is intended to be the sporting flagship of the family hatch range - so it's a surprise to see it hasn't been given more visual impact. The only modification is a set of smart 17-inch alloys; if you were expecting pure muscle, you'll be disappointed.

It's a similar story on the road. The GT retains the refinement and smooth ride that's made other variants so popular with high-mileage owners, but adds nothing in terms of driving pleasure.

In fact, this Laguna's strongest feature is its engine. The GT is available with 135bhp 2.0, 165bhp 2.0 turbo and 210bhp 3.0 V6 petrol powerplants, as well as 120bhp 1.9 and 150bhp 2.2-litre dCi diesels. Our car was fitted with the smooth turbo petrol, and offered ample performance, with 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 135mph.

For the ΂£18,915 price, buyers get a lot. In addition to the Dynamique's comprehensive standard kit, the newcomer boasts the alloy wheels, as well as sat-nav and part-leather trim, plus climate and cruise control. It may not be sporty, but the GT is a swift, capable cruiser.

FIRST OPINION

This car isn't for buyers wanting a bit of excitement. The GT offers good value for money and a wide choice of engines - but don't be misled by the name, as it's no sports saloon. The Laguna range still lacks a performance variant to tempt enthusiastic drivers.
