British drivers are spoiled when it comes to low-volume sports cars. We have Noble, Caterham and Ariel - but let's not forget Westfield, a Midlands firm that has built thrilling motors for more than 21 years. The latest is the Sport 2000, a Caterham R300 rival. Its pared-down body is instantly recognisable, but we can't help thinking Westfield's homage to the Lotus 7 shape is less successful than Caterham's.

Thanks to 210Nm of torque and a power-to-weight ratio of more than 300bhp per tonne, the Sport 2000 covers 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds and has a top speed of 132mph. Power is delivered evenly across the rev range, making the pace easily accessible. The only disappointing part of the drivetrain is the long-throw five-speed gearbox.

The Sport 2000 comes in component form for ΂£17,250, but the factory-built car is ΂£20,670. Compared to other rivals, the Westfield looks a bargain. British sports car buyers should make room on their shortlist.

FIRST OPINION

If you have never driven a raw, stripped-back sportster before, this Westfield can't fail to raise a smile. It doesn't feel quite as sharp as some rivals, but the more compliant suspension and less demanding gearbox make it more usable on the road. We're not too keen on the styling, but if you are on a limited budget, the low asking price means this model is well worth a look.
