While previous models had flimsy cabin trim, dull dynamics and nondescript styling, Hyundai has concentrated on making the new car much more in keeping with our expectations.
The result is a model that looks very smart. There's a hint of Honda Accord and Ford Mondeo about it - the Sonata has the appearance of a quality car.
Inside, the effect isn't such a success. The dash is well laid out and we like the Porsche-style dials, but the plastics aren't great and the leather seats lack the suppleness of European rivals'.
Overall, the latest Sonata is a decent effort, and shows the progress Hyundai has made. It's also the first car to get the new 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, which will power future large Hyundais, plus Mitsubishi and Chrysler models.
But while it's very smooth, we were disappointed with the unit's performance when mated to the four-speed auto box. That said, our car was a Korean model - gear ratios will be revised for the UK.
The steering still lacks sharpness, but the ride and handling are far better. So it will be interesting to see how the Sonata fares when it arrives in the spring.
How much will this Hyundai Sonata cost you to insure?
