The BMW 6-Series is one of the most distinctive cars on sale today. Available in Coupί¿½ and Convertible guises, the range has just got bigger, thanks to the introduction of a new 3.0-litre engine.
Producing 258bhp, the new straight-six unit is 130kg lighter than the 645i's V8, which promises to give the car even more accurate handling.
Fitted with the optional Dynamic Drive package, our Convertible's agility belied its size. At £2,935, the system isn't cheap, but it delivers a pliant ride and plenty of grip thanks to hydraulically controlled roll bars which adjust as cornering loads increase.
However, key to the newcomer's appeal is the engine, which is one of the smoothest we've ever experienced. With 27bhp more than the outgoing 3.0-litre it's more economical, more refined, and offers strong performance.
And once the fully automated hood is lowered, the twin exhausts deliver a silky soundtrack. A dechromed grille and an alternative standard alloy wheel design are the only exterior changes, while inside the cabin is unaltered.
The 630i Convertible's new 3.0-litre straight-six engine is smooth and refined, while performance is impressive.
Fitted with the Dynamic Drive package the handling is sharp too, but given it's the base model, the £50,655 price is high.
The new 630i Convertible is joined by a 630i Coup costing £50,655. Among the options on both is a head-up display that places speed and sat-nav info into the driver's eyeline.
