Is Porsche's brand new Cayman really as good as its big brother, the 911? Or is it little more than a Boxster with a roof? Auto Express has driven the very first car to reach the UK to find out the answer.

FIRST OPINION

We expected great things from the Cayman, and we're not disappointed. It's more practical than a 911 and a better driver's car than a Boxster - put simply, this is one of the best sports machines we have experienced in a long time. It's expensive and poorly specced, but these gripes don't detract from what is a fine achievement. It's the pick of the Porsche range.

AT A GLANCE

Only from the rear is the new Porsche radically different from the Boxster, with a stylish tailgate spoiler and huge hatch. Big badge also sets it apart - and for now, the Cayman is offered in S trim only. A watered-down version remains unconfirmed, but our spies suggest it will arrive in the middle of 2006.
