Peugeot 407 2.2 HDi

When it arrives in the UK, the 2.2 HDi is set to become the pick of the range

June 2006

Hybrid diesel power is tipped as the technology of tomorrow, but that doesn't mean Peugeot and Citroen have turned their backs on today's oil-burners. And in response to increasingly high outputs from family car rivals, Peugeot has launched a 168bhp diesel version of its 407. So, is it a slick performer?

The new oil-burner features a gutsy bi-turbo 2.2-litre HDi engine and a six-speed manual gearbox. It takes only a short time behind the wheel to tell this is a strong contender. Peak torque of 370Nm arrives at only 1,500rpm - lower in the rev range than any rival can manage. As a result, the car covers 0-62mph in only 8.7 seconds.

Despite the fact that an extra turbocharger has been fitted, there's relatively little noise from the HDi unit.

To match the pace, Peugeot has stiffened the newcomer's suspension settings - although in daily driving, the changes are barely noticeable, and the handling is as competent and comfortable as on other models in the 407 line-up. Set to go on sale alongside the V6 diesel variant, the 2.2-litre HDi will appear on UK price lists next month.

FIRST OPINION

As diesel technology becomes more advanced, we can't recommend it enough. Peugeot's 407 V6 oil-burner is a strong performer, but doesn't offer the economy many buyers expect. Opt for this new 2.2, and you get 46mpg plus good acceleration from low revs. When it arrives in the UK, the 2.2 HDi is set to become the pick of the range.

AT A GLANCE

Set apart from lesser variants by discreet chrome on the grille, the new bi-turbo 407 is designed as a sporty model. The engine will also appear in the 407 Coupé next year.
    Engine: 2.2-litre 4cyl, 168bhp
    Econ/CO2: 46.3mpg/160g/km
