You only have to look at the performance figures to understand that the Focus ST is no ordinary family hatchback. Of all the cars featured in this line-up, only the GT and GT40 supercars have higher top speeds.

When it was unveiled in 2005, the ST was an enormous leap forward from its slightly underwhelming predecessor, the ST170.

This time there’s no mistaking the car’s performance potential. An aggressive bodykit, 18-inch alloy wheels and twin tailpipes are all standard. And inside there’s a bank of extra dials mounted on top of the dashboard, as well as supportive Recaro sports seats.

Fire up the 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine, and you can’t help but smile. The turbocharged unit serves up a rorty exhaust note and when pushed delivers scorching acceleration. Its only drawback is an alarming thirst for fuel.

But there’s more to this ST than just a great engine. Meaty steering, sensational body control and strong grip on all types of road mean the Focus is as entertaining as it is rapid. It’s surprisingly comfortable, too, thanks to the supple suspension, and superb brakes round the remarkable chassis off. Better still, as with all fast Fords, the Focus offers plenty of performance per pound – entry-level models start at £18,845.
