Jaguar XF

Big cat has caused a stir with one of its best yet

Cruising ability is a key strength of XF, but it handles superbly, too

February 2009

Auto Express’s reigning Car of the Year is a British-built, British-designed masterpiece. Not only is the XF the finest executive saloon on the market, it’s also arguably one of the best four-doors Jaguar has ever made. As a member of our long-term fleet, the car in our pictures has had several thousand miles to prove itself. And it mixes the firm’s sporting heritage with modern efficiency and style.

Two imminent new V6 diesel engines will deliver strong pace and economy, while petrol buyers still get a characterful V8. A new high-performance flagship is on the horizon, too: the 503bhp supercharged XFR will tackle the BMW M5 with 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds.

But every XF is good to drive. Even the cheapest variants offer a fine balance between long-distance cruising comfort and agility.

The cabin enhances the sporty feel. Rather than try to create the class’s most spacious interior, Jaguar has served up a cosseting, cosy environment. Neat touches such as the air vents and gear selector that glide into view as you start the engine give a luxurious feel.

The XF is practical, too. Adults can sit comfortably in the rear, while the 540-litre boot is more than adequate. Here is a class-leading executive model that’s here to stay.
