Feast your eyes on the clearest shots yet of the second-generation Mercedes CLS. Hidden under heavy disguise, the only details peeking out of the new four-door coupé are the neat headlights, rear lights but it’s easy to see the sporty profile.

Sitting on the same platform as the new E-Class, the new CLS will get a wide range of engines including Mercedes’ latest petrol and diesel units, as well as a BlueHybrid model that will use the same engine system as the S400 BlueHybrid. An AMG model should top the range and produce a revised target of in excess of 500bhp. Mercedes' 7-speed gearbox will be offered with these powerplants.

Competition will come from Porsche's Panamera and Audi's upcoming A7 – which was previewed at January’s Detroit Motor Show in the shape of the Sportback Concept – so expect this CLS to be sharper yet more comfortable than its predecessor. Sales will start in 2011.
