VW Golf R20

With four-wheel drive and 270bhp, watch out Focus RS

VW Golf R20

April 2009

If the Golf GTi isn’t hot enough for you, VW has the answer! This is the flagship R20 – a more powerful but more efficient replacement for the R32. Gone is the V6 engine and in comes an uprated version of the GTi’s 2.0-litre turbocharged unit.

Producing around 270bhp, it’s hooked up to a four-wheel drive system, which should rocket the R20 from 0-60mph in less than six seconds and onto a 150mph top speed.  Styling cues will include an aggressive bodykit and larger wheels. As you can see, the trademark centrally mounted twin exhausts will be carried over.

The finished article will make its debut at the Nurburgring 24hr race in May. Prices should start from around £25,00 for the three-door when the R20 goes on sale early next year.
