If you’re not sure, you’re not alone! Auto Express discovered 92 per cent of drivers had no idea what age their tyres were, or how to check. While one in four had tyres that were older than our recommended six years.

  • Confusing sidewall markings currently show the tyres build date only, and that four-digit code baffled most of the drivers we quizzed. The first two digits of the code signify a week number running from 1 to 52, while the second pair corresponds to a year. So if it says 2507 the rubber was made in the 25th week of 2007.
  • What’s more, we discovered fitters and car manufacturers are legally allowed to supply and sell rubber as ‘brand new’ – even if it’s been sitting on a shelf for years.
  • A spokeswoman for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said: “There is no legislative limit on how long a tyre can be kept before it is supplied.”
