Safest MPV: Ford S-Max

It goes without saying that an MPV, targeted primarily at young families, will have safety high on its list of priorities. And the S-Max trumps them all. Tested back in 2006, Ford's sporty people carrier achieved a full five-star rating from Euro NCAP for adult occupant protection.

Ford's Intelligent Protection System (IPS) combines a stiff body structure, cutting-edge restraint equipment and driver aids that help to avoid an accident entirely. Front, side, curtain and knee airbags are standard, as well as collapsible steering column and safety pedals.

In terms of electronics ABS, EBD and ESP are all standard while more advanced kit such as adaptive cruise control and continuously variable dampers are offered as options.

Also worth a mention is the Renault Kangoo and SEAT Altea, the highest-scoring MPVs for child occupant and pedestrian protection respectively.
