French car makers have always had a strong reputation for building models that are frugal and fun – and Peugeot is no different.

Now, bosses have added to the brand’s eco appeal, by introducing the Blue Lion badge. This is worn by vehicles that produce less than 130g/km of CO2, and are built in factories that meet the European Union’s strict environmental standards.

Spearheading the company’s green dream is an eco-friendly version of the 207, which gets a tweaked engine and aerodynamics, plus a gearshift indicator. Called Economique, the newcomer emits only 99g/km of CO2 – making it exempt from road tax – and returns an impressive 74.3mpg.

Prices start at £12,995. At present, more than 50 cars carry the Blue Lion label, although the majority of these models are found in the 107, 207 and 308 ranges.

Other eco-friendly Peugeots include the 407 1.6 HDi, which emits 129g/km of CO2, and the rugged new 3008 crossover, using the same engine and producing 137g/km. Buyers looking for a clean mini-MPV should consider the 119g/km, 62.8mpg Bipper Tepee.
