Surprised to see an X-Type in our line-up? Don’t be. While it’s not a big fans’ favourite, it marked several milestones for the brand. Not only was it the first Jaguar to be fitted with a diesel engine, the 2004 wagon was the manufacturer’s first production estate car, and the X-Type remains the only all-wheel-drive Jaguar ever made.
This model was designed to conquer the compact executive market, dominated by the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes C-Class and Audi A4. It was developed in record time – two years from board approval to production – and built away from Jaguar’s Midlands heartland at owner Ford’s Halewood plant on Merseyside. This, and the fact it shared some of its underpinnings with Ford’s Mondeo, got purists hot under the collar.
But the twin-headlamp design and rounded lines were a nod towards classic Jaguar styling. And under the skin, engineers worked hard to make sure there was a hint of the refinement and driver involvement you would expect.
Early models featured four-wheel drive, and there was a choice of 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0-litre V6 engines. Later 2.0-litre petrol and diesel cars were – to the horror of traditionalists – front-driven, but the 2.2-litre diesel launched in 2003 was arguably the best of the bunch.
While the X-Type didn’t succeed in making Jag a compact exec class force, it brought thousands of new customers to the brand. Plus, as the second best-selling big cat of all-time, it helped the firm survive to produce today’s stunning new models.

I'm not surprised at all to see the X-Type here. I have the 2.2 diesel estate. It is a top all round car cool enough to look the part in the company executive car park. It has the torque and room to lug heavy loads and pull most caravans. In addition it has the speed and sporty-ness to keep pace with any of its nearest competitors. Sooner have the X type than BMW or Audi . never had a Merc so can’t comment
I had one too very cool 3ltr V6 AWD Sport model packed with Gadgets like a touch screen sat nav, I could even send text messages on a touch screen, a fews year before you could with a mobile. Super planted and quick. Way better than a German saloon. Did annoy me that people said nice Mondeo, Jealous perhaps, but Ford dropped the ball. They should have launched the X type first and said the Mondeo is based on the Jag, would have helped both do better!
Why can't you edit on this stupid site!
I recently bought an X-Type 2.2d Sport in Black. It is beautiful and I love it. Looks awesome in the car park and has a beautiful and traditional Jaguar interior. Far nicer place to spend time in than in a German saloon. I wanted an A4 S-Line for a while but the Jag has the coolness and character no other car in it's class comes near to.
6 months on, no problems at all, it still gets eyed up more than Kelly Brook in a bikini and I still am so proud to have it.
AE, you said the styling was too conservative in its class. Come round my house in a BMW 3 Series and get your mate to bring an A4, I'll get some babes and we'll see who's car is the most attractive, yeh?
I purchased a X - Type 2 years ago and I love it even to this day. Its a great car and when compared to my wifes 3 series I choose the Jag anyday of the week!
jag just over designed the front it didn't need the fancy design to bonnet or oval head lamps... Straight forward sutler bonnet and round head lamps it would of sold a lot more,,, But I have owned this car in 3L form and it's a good drive, the 4x4 gearing can be a bit unforgiving if you make a mistake but still it's sweet .. Overall I give it 4 star... for what a paid for it maybe even 4.5 I got a lot of car for my money and it's a JAG
I have had the 2.2 D variant for about 3 yrs now
All i can say is its a car you just get in and drive it just goes and goes 99.9% reliability
i do about 40,000 miles a yr - and the "Baby jag" just delivers all the time. mine was Spec-ted with the jag telephone in and its hands free telephone is ideal.
Lookswise - for a run of the mill care its very elegant - (try counting the no of ellipses used in its design).
Spacewise - compared to a 3 series it got more space up front - a little less behind the 3 series it seems is visa-versa and the boot is more than adequate for most purposes.
where this vehicle comes into own is with very cleverly thought out design
Roadholding and stability - overall very good taught and holds the road fine in most scenarios
Braking - this is where i find mine lets it down under quite heave braking i find the vehicle tends to dive
Where this vehicle comes into own is with very cleverly thought out design
eg
The main and dip lamps use the same type bulbs
Travel across the water and you can change the light beams from RHD to LHD just by adjusting the small adjusters behind the main bulbs (2 min job)
The main travel computer can chg from imperial to metric at the touch of a button (on my prev range rover that was a dealer laptop job)
little touches clearly thought out
Overall, as a "undiscovered" alternative to the 3 series Passats & A4´s - any day of the week
I'm not surprised to see the X-Type here. I have the 3.0 Sport AWD model and it's a fantastic car. But surely by looking at the figures it's the best selling jag ever, not second best?
