BMW 1-Series

Economy: 62.8mpg, CO2/road tax: 119g/km/£30

BMW 1-Series

November 2010

The EfficientDynamics package slashes emissions to make BMWs tax-friendly for business and private buyers. It also boosts economy – so if you want a cost-effective premium two-door, the 118d Coupé stands out. For a sporty 141bhp model, a return of 62.8mpg is impressive – even more so when you consider the nine-second 0-62mph time and sharp rear-wheel-drive handling. All of this, and a miserly 119g/km CO2 output, too.

As with any coupé, the 118d demands a few minor compromises. It has two individual rear seats rather than a three-person bench, while the saloon layout limits access to the 370-litre boot. Still, the SE trim’s big-car features include rear parking sensors, twin-zone climate control and a multifunction leather steering wheel.
