Open-air fun doesn’t usually go hand-in-hand with fuel-sipping thirst – but the A3 provides the best of both worlds. The compact cabrio is great to drive and your wallet will feel the benefits, too, as stop-start technology helps the 1.6 TDI achieve 65.7mpg.

Mid-range Sport trim includes a fully automated hood. It’s one of the fastest-operating drop-tops around and provides impressive refinement when in place. Only the large over-the-shoulder blindspots and slightly awkward looks with the roof up detract from the package – but neither really matters when the sun is shining and the hood is safely stowed…
