New Citroen C4 vs Volkswagen Golf

Citroen’s new C4 aims to make waves in the compact family car class. We see if it can sink VW’s capable Golf.

Citroen C4 vs Volkswagen Golf

December 2010

Citroen has rediscovered its flair, with its cheeky and capable DS3 supermini beating the best in a series of Auto Express group tests. Now, top brass want to pull off the same trick in the compact family car sector with the all-new C4.

Gone is the quirky look of the previous model, in favour of more grown-up styling. The C4 also promises strong practicality, as it features a spacious cabin and one of the class’s largest load bays, while on the road, the emphasis is on refinement. As before, there is a wide range of petrol and diesel engines to choose from, plus the EGS semi-automatic box. We test the punchy 2.0-litre HDi oil-burner in flagship Exclusive spec.

Pitched against the new C4 is our undisputed champ in this sector: the Volkswagen Golf. The legendary hatch is now in its sixth generation, and it still sets the benchmark. So, can Citroen continue its winning ways, or will VW put an end to this French renaissance?

Biased review

I agree that Golf is (probably) a better car overall, but to say "the styling is anonymous" for Citroen shows a certain bias - the C4 won the 2nd place even before the test drive!

It's not a beautiful or shockingly bold design, but it's rival (Golf) is one of the dullest, most ubiquitous designs out there - not ugly or flawed in any way, just dull!

CITROEN IS INTERESTING, GOLF IS DULL ...

Why do people buy the Toyota branded cars? Are Auris(Corolla) exciting or interesting? Do they drive well, fast or economically? In all cases, the answer is 'No'. They are dull and boring. The Citroen is more interesting, some might go as far as to say, exciting with flair. But, this does not a Top Car make. The Golf may seem dull, but, when you feel the quality, you know you which is the best choice.

@CyprusYid.
You missed the point of my comment, or I didn't explain myself well enough - it's not the outcome of the comparison that I question, but it seems the Citroen didn't get a fair start.

The review picks every C4 flaw (like the "bland" styling) but fails to address the same problems found on the avversary - Golf is the King, and to dethrone it one would need to produce a car that is at least 10% better in every single category (performance, consumption, interior) while carrying a 20% lower price tag. Unless it's initials are F. F. mk3 :-)

AE have a deal with VW??

Every single time do AE put a car up against the golf does the dull VW win.

Its bland to look at, its bland to sit in and its bland to drive.

The list of cars that are better to look at and are just as good quality to sit in is endless. I would say the golf isnt even in the top 5 of this class any more on overall package.

Re. MKO's points, the Alfa Guiletta is at least 20% better in all aspects than a golf. Economy, Space, Quality, Saftey, Power, everything. I would also say the Focus, Astra and 1 series all trump the boring golf.

More Hype?

If the Golf is better than anything in its class anywhere, why doesn't it outsell everything else in its class everywhere, you must ask yourself? Over the years I've listened to the continual hype and compared its' socalled "luxury interior" with others in its class and found there is generally little difference. I would say I have a sharp eye for detail, VW take a bland shape eg (Golf) and make it look interesting with pretty Lights and exterior accessories also VW copied the rear suspension design from the Focus to help it handle and drive tons better than the one it was designed with. At the end of the day people buy cars for different reasons, we need facts from the Editors not opinions, let us make-up our own minds about style and quality!

YOU EITHER LOVE IT OR HATE IT

Is it me, or is the VW Golf the most controversial car???

I Agree

mko_20v I agree with you in the sense that reviews are biased for the German makes like Volkswagen however I do think the C4 is gorgeous compared to the Golf - there are many cars that also are. I also agree with AndyG in that there are loads more cars that are better than the Golf - I don't know why its so popular!

The Geeb

If the new C4 is bland, the "Valiumwagon" sorry Volkswagon is positively coma inducing. The painfulling obvious and now irritating bias to that boxy, dated and overpriced hatchack , sorry words fail me. We need help if that is the best. The C4 looks interesting and i will certainly be giving it some consideration.

Facts and Figures

Verdict

We knew the VW Golf was a class act coming into this test – and the new C4 only highlights the depths of its talent. On the surface, the Citroen has a lot going for it, as it’s spacious, solidly built and, in range-topping Exclusive trim, very well equipped. It’s also refined and delivers a surprising turn of speed. The trouble is, we can’t help feeling the car is a bit of a missed opportunity for
the company. The styling is anonymous, while the lacklustre driving dynamics leave it lagging behind the class leaders. As a result, the Golf maintains its grip on the compact family sector. There are few, if any, significant flaws in the package, and Match trim shows it in a positive light. The VW is well equipped, good value for money, highly desirable and great to drive. It will take something special to knock it off top spot.
