Even a recent facelift hasn’t helped the Phaeton avoid heavy discounting. Despite being a beautifully handcrafted luxury limousine, the big Volkswagen has always struggled to find favour with captains of industry, who prefer the upmarket appeal of models from Mercedes, Audi and Jaguar.

As a result, the German maker is already offering to chop £5,520 from the 3.0-litre V6 TDI version, reducing the price from £47,725 to £42,205. If you can live with the mainstream badge and the slightly dated cabin, then the Phaeton is worth a look.
