Alfa 166 3.0 V6 Super Lusso

You don't so much own an Alfa Romeo as have an affair with it

By Craig Cheetham

March 2002

You don't so much own an Alfa Romeo as have an affair with it. But, as with all relationships, we have seen a few turbulent times. Nothing serious enough to warrant an acrimonious separation, but enough to make you think long and hard about your future together.
The first 5,000 of the Alfa's 21,000 miles on our fleet were wonderful. That silky V6 delivered effortless power and tyre-stripping performance, emphasised by a fluid six-speed manual gearbox and an exciting, snarling engine note. The interior's luxurious front armchairs and tasteful leather went down well, too.
The same cannot be said for the offset pedal position and poky rear legroom. And practicality isn't our 166's strongest suit. We tried to load a new TV only to find that the box didn't fit through the door or boot apertures. The interior finish has raised a few doubts, too. As well as the clutch pedal rubber falling off repeatedly, the driver's-side carpet is loose and wearing thin, and the leather seats are looking tired. Not exactly what you expect of a ΂£30,000 executive car.
A tyre blowout was dramatic, although the car's handling minimised any serious loss of control. The front bumper was damaged and replaced, but the new item doesn't fit flush, causing condensation in the foglamp.
Yet none of that puts us off the Alfa's richly rewarding driving experience. Its appeal is focussed on the gorgeous V6 which is not only fiery at the top end, but picks up instantly in any gear and at any revs. That's just as well because during the past 8,000 miles, the clutch pedal has become increasingly stiff, destroying the slickness of the brilliant gearbox. Let's hope it isn't a sign of clutch failure. Predominantly urban driving has taken its toll on fuel consumption though, resulting in average returns of just over 20mpg.
However, there's still something irresistible about a red Alfa, even if its looks are currently compromised by the mysterious appearance of a dent in one of the front doors. But there's no denying the handsome body, seductive exhaust note and sparkling performance which keep our relationship on the right track.
