With a name like Swift, it wasn't going to be long before Suzuki launched a hot version of its supermini. And we were so impressed when we tested the 123bhp Sport (Issue 938) that we wanted to find out how it would fare as a long-term prospect. So, the latest car to arrive at Auto Express's HQ is a Cosmic Black example of the racy hatch.

Its diminutive dimensions not only make it one of the cutest motors in our car park, but also ensure it's ideal for threading down narrow streets: it's already earned my respect in that regard. And what it lacks in terms of out-and-out power, the Suzuki more than makes up for in sheer enthusiasm. In the three weeks it's been with us so far, every time I've driven the Swift a smile has crept on to my face.

When I have managed to find a twisty A-road, it's as though I have got my own on-the-road go-kart - no surprise, as the Suzuki even fitted perfectly into the starting blocks of the Daytona pro-karting circuit in Sandown Park, Surrey, for our photoshoot.

Complement
What's proving very handy already is the Swift's keyless entry system. Previously, I've thought this feature was a gimmick on cars, but use it every day and you soon realise how practical it is - especially if your hands are full.

And considering how much the Swift Sport enjoys going round corners, that hook is going to prove very useful indeed!

Equipment: keyless entry, CD, alloys... all come as standard. There is no need to plough through an expensive options list, because it’s all already fitted. Driveability: with its eager turn-in and superb grip, the Suzuki is like an old-school hot hatch. Whether scooting around town or tackling a tricky kart track, it never fails to entertain. Individuality: the streets are overpopulated with MINIs, so it’s great to have a similarly sized alternative that’s not only fun but also stands out from the crowd.

Torque: the 1.6 is a bit lacking here. To get up to speed you really have to push the Swift hard, so a bit more power at lower revs wouldn’t go amiss. Boot: it may have a handy hook, but even with the seats folded the boot isn’t that big. Come to think of it, the few people who have braved the back bench have not exactly been impressed, either.
