Audi TT Coupe

The beautiful Audi TT is great to look and good to drive, just don’t expect this 2+2 coupe to offer the last word in practicality

Audi TT
  • Rating:
  • For : Great looks, strong residuals, punchy 2.0 TFSI engine
  • Against : Tiny rear seats, poor visibility, high prices

There aren't many cars on the road that can rival the Audi TT for visual impact. It can trace its design roots back to 1998, but it still looks fresh and unique. The TT is based on the same chassis as  the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf, and it offers a choice of front or four-wheel drive and a variety of petrol and diesel engines, from mild to wild. The TT can be specified with Audi's Magnetic Ride dampers, which offer Comfort and Sport settings and makes this car very nimble. Top of the range 335bhp TT RS versions are extremely powerful, while the 2.0 TDI diesel version returns 53.3mpg. An open-topped TT Roadster is also available.

Our choice: 2.0 TFSI

Styling

This second generation Audi TT was launched in 2008, but it still stands out from the crowd thanks to its clean, crisp lines. To our eyes, the elegant coupe is better looking than the roadster. All cars get a rear wing which pops up automatically at 80mph. The mid-range TTS gets a subtle bodykit and 18-inch alloys, while the flagship TT RS gets a fixed rear wing, huge exhausts and a 10mm lower ride height. Inside, the fit and finish is as good as anything offered by Porsche, while the optional leather interiors look and feel extremely luxurious.

Driving and Performance

There are four engines are on offer in the TT. Entry-level cars get a 1.8-litre turbo petrol, while the 2.0 TFSI is the next motor in the range. Both are punchy and refined, and even the larger engine will return 36mpg. The 2.5-litre five cylinder turbo is only available in the TT RS, and it offers a warbling, gutsy five-cylinder exhaust note. Diesel fans can choose a 168bhp 2.0-litre TDI, which promises fuel consumption of 53.3mpg. All TTs are poised and agile. However, the optional Magnetic Ride dampers are well worth the extra outlay. Offering a choice of Normal and Sport modes, the upgraded suspension automatically adapts to road conditions. The S tronic automatic gearbox should also be considered, as it is one of the slickest, smoothest and fastest-shifting automatics on the market. Only entry-level cars are two-wheel drive, all the rest get the firm’s grippy quattro four-wheel-drive transmission.

MPG and running costs

The TT is expensive to buy, and the 2.5-litre turbo petrol model is expensive to run. But few cars at any price hold their value better than the TT. Even today, the Coupe retains 60 per cent of its value after three years, meaning total ownership costs are low. If you’re a company car driver, go for the S tronic double clutch over the manual. It costs more to buy, but offers better fuel economy than the manual.

Practicality

Inside, the focus is on style ahead of practicality. However, the TT coupe is reasonably spacious, with plenty of room for front seat occupants. Space in the rear seats is extremely tight, and even small children will find conditions cramped. It's better to use the space as an extra storage space, while the split folding rear seats mean you can increase boot space from 290 litres (which is already pretty good for a coupe) to 700 litres.

Safety and reliability

With two-stage driver and passenger airbags, ESP and Isofix child seat mountings, the TT is as safe as any other Audi in the range. The car was awarded a five-star rating by crash protection experts Euro NCAP, too. Owners tell us that the car is mostly reliable, although glitches have been reported with the automatic gearbox and electrics - particularly on cars that have been retro fitted with iPod docks.

proper audi

i think you all know my opinions by now regarding the current nonsense with Audi, too many niche cars, too many versions of niche cars, too many facelifts, too many upgrades, ridiculous pricing etc etc., but this is one Audi i would happily own. ok, its pricey, but residuals are excellent, especially so with the proper spec., a proper Audi in my opinion, they do look fantastic.

Dear AE when rating a car, rate it for its class. If I am considering a 2+2 coupe I take it for fact I am not buying practicality. So don't downgrade the car for the obvious. Nobody expects a coupe with minibus practicality. Compare it to the practicality of its class rivals and rate it. It's a shame to give a 4 star rating to an excellent car. Other than price, the TT is one of the ultimate coupes, 5 star for me.

The TT - an excellent car

Author: Please get the basic facts correct in a review or you undermine confidence in the article... The Audi TT Mk2 was actually launched in 2006 two years before the date quoted in this article.

I ordered a Roadster version with the 2000cc engine driving front wheels only, through an S-Tronic gearbox. Delivery in April 2007 meant it was a pretty early example of the open model.

Early magazine tests suggested it was a decent car and that the 2 litre petrol engine was the one to have... After owning the vehicle now for almost 5 years I concur with the recommendation.

Handling is crisp, performance all that I want these days and overall its performance and reliability have been fine. My days of bombing around in an M5 just to blow away the cobwebs have been abandoned as I was in real danger of losing my licence - something not to be contemplated. The TT makes the right noises, is genuinely fun to use and actually gives more perception of speed on public roads than my last M5 (an E39 V8) ever did.

And yet the TT was a car bought mainly with 'the head' rather than the 'heart' - which hankered for an M3 or a Boxter S.

Daily usage has confirmed that the 'head' was well screwed-on when the choice was made. I still really enjoy the exhaust burble and crackle on the overrun, the paddle shift can be enjoyable when I'm in the mood, albeit the twin-clutch 'auto' is so good that flappy paddle usage is not that high.

So far only tyres and (extended) services have been needed after two initial queries were sorted under warranty . My Audi Dealer (Birmingham Audi) has been excellent and I recommend them.
