The XF has stolen the BMW 5 Series’ Best Used Executive Car title – and deservedly so. The big cat was recently crowned our Driver Power Car of the Decade, and who are we to argue with results from 300,000 readers?

Early examples are now more affordable, at well under £20,000, but it’s best to spend slightly more and find a Luxury or Premium Luxury model – both of which come loaded with kit.

The Jag is gradually making its way on to the used market in greater numbers, too, so it’s becoming easier to find all the time. Firebreathing 5.0-litre V8 XFR models are pure indulgence, while the quick and economical diesels make most sense. Early cars came with a 2.7-litre diesel, but this made way for a 3.0-litre in 2009. The latter is smoother and more punchy, and comes in 237bhp or 271bhp power outputs. Flagship oil-burners wear an S badge.

As you’d imagine, the ride and handling are superb, while the interior features great details such as the pop-up gear selector. Good looks, excellent refinement and decent passenger space add to the appeal, but optional extra-large alloys will affect the ride.

The accolades keep piling up. The Best Used Executive Car gong joins the Driver Power Car of the Decade crown in the XF’s trophy cabinet – which is already bulging with our Car of the Year 2008 and Driver Power 2009 awards. This used car merits special attention.

Audi A6

2004-2011

Strong sales from new mean the previous A6 offers plenty of choice for used buyers, and the 2.0-litre TDI diesel models are the best of the bunch. Comfortable, refined and surprisingly good value, the Audi is as sensible and affordable as they come, while the Avant estate offers added versatility.

2003-2010

A brilliant late used buy, as the arrival of the latest model has affected values of the outgoing car. Diesels make the most sense, especially the 520d, but it’s difficult not to be seduced by the more powerful 530d. Every model in the range is great to drive and well built.
