Used Car of the Year

Sharp looks combine with great handling to make Ford supermini a winner

Ford Fiesta

October 2011

It’s hard to believe that it’s two years since the Ford Fiesta took our New Car of the Year crown. But all the things that make it so appealing in new car showrooms apply to used examples. And with the cheapest cars now starting from £5,500, getting your hands on the best supermini around has never been easier.

The Fiesta has spent three consecutive years as Britain’s best-selling new model, so second-hand examples are widely available, at franchised dealers and independents alike. And with a wide range of trims and engines, there’s a model to suit every taste and budget.

The 1.25-litre petrol is a great all-rounder and the one we would recommend, but the 1.4-litre diesel and ultra-efficient 1.6-litre ECOnetic will give you even cheaper fuel bills. The latter even promises sub-100g/km CO2 emissions.

What sets the Fiesta apart from the competition is its sheer breadth of abilities. From behind the wheel, it combines razor-sharp handling with a supple ride and beautifully weighted controls. But you don’t have to be in the driver’s seat to appreciate the stylish looks and smart detailing.

This Fiesta also saw the introduction of technology previously found only in bigger Fords, so look out for higher trim or well kitted out models that feature useful day-to-day kit such as Bluetooth, cruise control, parking sensors and a heated windscreen.

It’s great to drive and look at, so it’s not surprising the Fiesta is the nation’s favourite – and it fully deserves our Used Car of the Year 2011 award.

Driver Power 2011

What you said: “It’s classed as a small car, but the Fiesta is much more refined than you would expect. Economy is impressive, no matter how it’s driven. So far, it’s been reliable, fun, practical and economical – which is all we can ask of it.”
