Audi A2

Audi A2 Buying Alternatives

If you can't scrape enough together for an A2, here are four alternative choices

July 2002

Audi's all-aluminium A2 is arguably the most desirable supermini ever, with a solid, luxurious feel and funky looks. We've been running a diesel for nearly a year and have had no reliability hitches. But quality and a trendy image don't come cheap. Pick one of our four alternatives and you'll look cool and save money, too...
Volkswagen Polo
This recently replaced Volkswagen makes a great used buy, especially if you get a revised post-1999 one. The Polo matches the A2 for image and quality, and has a solid feel plus a reputation for reliability. Rear passengers are a bit cramped and the boot is tight, but the drive is pleasant. Avoid the sluggish 1.0-litre engine and the non-turbo diesels.
Engines: 1.0, 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol; 1.9-litre diesel. Years: 1995-2001. Prices: GBP3,000-11,000.
Ford Ka
If ever a car was made with style as its most important aspect, it was the Ford Ka. Six years after launch it still looks fresh, and is popular with younger drivers thanks to tempting insurance deals and low running costs. The Ka has mass appeal be-cause of its practicality, and the
1.3-litre engine is basic, but reliable. Early cars now look cheap at GBP3,500, and all models will be easy to sell on.
Engine: 1.3-litre petrol. Years: 1996-present. Prices: GBP3,500-8,000.
Toyota Yaris
Before the Yaris, the concept of a desirable Toyota supermini would have seemed bizarre. But where the old Starlet was rough and dull to drive, the Yaris is entertaining and well built. It's also popular with image-conscious buyers. Even the 1.0-litre engine offers lively performance and good cruising, but avoid the spartan entry-level models.
Engines: 1.0 and 1.3-litre petrol; 1.4-litre diesel. Years: 1999-present. Prices: GBP4,800-10,000.
BMW compact
The appeal of the baby 3-Series lies mostly in its badge. A strong image and decent residual values count in its favour, while its size makes it great around town. Build is good, too, and Compacts have a fine reliability record. Early diesels aren't pleasant and 1.6-litre versions feel underpowered, so opt for the 1.8 or 1.9-litre units for performance.
Engines: 1.6, 1.8 and 1.9-litre petrol; 1.7-litre diesel. Years: 1994-2001. Prices: GBP5,800-12,000.
