Thankfully, the same platform and mechanicals are used for a range of VW Group cars, two of which are included below. Check our alternatives if you want style and performance in a more affordable package. VW Beetle It may not have the kudos of the Audi, but the Beetle is still a shrewd buy. It lacks the sports car credentials of the TT, but is based on the same platform and, in hotter versions, even makes use of the same engine. With solid build quality and mechanical reliability, the cool VW makes a lot of sense, and it will also be cheaper to service than the Audi. Engines: 1.6, 2.0, 1.8 Turbo and 2.3-litre V5 petrol; 1.9-litre diesel. Years: 2000-present. Prices: GBP7,850-13,275 Audi A3 What about a TT rival from within the Audi camp? Again we have the same platform being used, but choose the A3 1.8 T Sport quattro and you don't sacrifice the high-octane four-wheel- drive performance of the coupe TT. It may lack those eye-catching curves, but with the option of a five-door model, your driving thrills could include greater practicality. Engines: 1.6 and 1.8-litre petrol; 1.9-litre diesel. Years: 1996-present. Prices: GBP5,300-19,475 Fiat Coupe A design to rival the TT's. The sharp styling is a clue to the performance available from the 2.0-litre turbo engine, which offers as much power as the front-wheel-drive chassis can take. Drivers of the turbo are treated to a six-speed gearbox on post-'98 models and there's also the option of normally aspirated engines. Production finished in 2000, so buy now and you might get a future classic. Engine: 2.0-litre petrol. Years: 1995-2000 Prices: GBP2,600-14,100 Toyota Celica You can't beat Japanese reliability, and with a high-revving 190bhp engine, the Celica makes a great TT alternative. The current model has evolved into a sharp-looking coupe, with some lines and angles rivalling those of the more expensive Audi. Prices start at around GBP14,000 for a year 2000 190bhp model, or you could choose the 140bhp version, which is available for even less. Engine: 1.8-litre petrol. Years: 1999-present. Prices: GBP11,500-18,250
