Skoda Superb

How do you define Skoda's Superb? A limousine for the price of a Mondeo or an extra large Passat for the cost of a well equipped Golf? However you describe it, the Czech firm's flagship model certainly made waves when it was launched, and two years on it makes an exceptional used buy.

How do you define Skoda's Superb? A limousine for the price of a Mondeo or an extra large Passat for the cost of a well equipped Golf? However you describe it, the Czech firm's flagship model certainly made waves when it was launched, and two years on it makes an exceptional used buy.
It really is a Passat in disguise - apart from the longer wheelbase, it's virtually identical save for changes to the grille and lights. And similarly, inside the architecture is the same, apart from Skoda-specific trims and green instrument lighting.
Mechanically, it draws heavily from the Passat, taking the range's best engines. Oil-burners are popular and Skoda buyers like high-value Classic and Comfort variants - the Elegance is luxurious but expensive. There aren't a huge number of Superbs in circulation outside the dealer network, though; our research managed to find only a single private used car for sale!
Checklist

* Turbos: TDI Superbs can suffer from a cracked turbo intake pipe. This causes lethargy and plenty of smoke under acceleration - check the rear view mirror after pulling away swiftly if in doubt.

* Engines: early 1.8 T models can be aff-ected by a VW Group coil pack problem. All Superbs should be fixed by now, so check service history for evidence of work.

* Bodywork: look over bumpers for signs of parking damage. It's a deceptively big car, and body-coloured panels are not cheap to repair.

* Security: central instrument display matrix sometimes fails, so flick through trip computer/stereo to ensure that there are no dead cells.

* Gearbox: check gear linkage for signs of wear. Also, some Superbs can be reluctant to engage gears when cold - if it's a lower-mileage car, this will almost certainly improve with time. Diesels can suffer from clutch judder.
Driving impressions
The diesel engines are torquey, relaxing and economical. The 1.9-litre TDI is a little unrefined, while the 2.5-litre V6 TDI is smooth. But 2.0-litre petrol units seem gutless, the 1.8-litre turbo is punchy if soulless, while the petrol V6 is fantastic but thirsty. Although road manners are not sporty, the benefit is an excellent ride. And while parking is tricky, due to the car's length, costlier models feature reversing sensors.
Glass's View
The Superb has struggled to attract buyers since its launch. This could be due to the fact that it hasn't been actively marketed by Skoda. The upper medium sector of the market is difficult to compete in and dealers are not used to selling this size of car. Recent price reductions suggest that it was originally too expensive and Skoda is now going to probably try selling the Superb on price. A good motor and probably one of the best kept secrets in the trade. Jeff Paterson, senior editor, Glass's Guide
Life With A Superb
I wanted something large, well made and comfortable to replace my Audi A8 on my retirement, and the Superb fitted the bill. I find it incredibly comfortable, well equipped and tremendous value for money. Ernest Greaves, Totteridge, London
Lads in the office make jokes about me driving a Skoda. But I have the last laugh, as I've got by far the best company car. My Superb is superb. Dave Randles, Bollington, Cheshire

VERDICT

Skoda adds another model to its impressive range with the boastfully badged Superb. You have to be pretty confident to be so blatant in your naming, but the big Skoda is more than a match for its moniker. The car works well as a refined and capable long-distance companion. Spacious, well equipped and sensibly priced, it really has everything it needs to compete in the family motor market. If people see past the badge, they'll be getting a superb car for the money.
