Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible revealed in New York

Seventh-generation Chevrolet Corvette Z06 goes topless at the New York Motor Show

Chevrolet has unveiled the most powerful drop top it has ever produced, the Corvette Z06 Convertible. It features the same 625bhp supercharged 6.2-litre V8 as the hardtop and has debuted at the New York Motor Show.

The stiffer aluminium structure of the seventh-generation Z06 has allowed Chevrolet to create the first convertible model since 1963. The folding fabric top – available in four colours – can be stowed away at up to speeds of 30mph. It’s also fitted with sound-absorbing padding and a glass rear window, helping improve refinement.

Aside from the fabric roof, the hardtop and convertible share the same powertrain and aerodynamic configurations. The standard Corvette Z06 features a front splitter, spats around the front wheel openings, a unique carbon-fibre bonnet with a larger vent and rear spoiler. A carbon fibre aero package is also available, which generates four times as much downforce as the standard setup. It adds a carbon fibre front splitter with winglets, carbon fibre sills and a larger rear spoiler. The package is available in black or a visible carbon-fibre finish.

The more aggressive Z07 package adds larger winglets to the front splitter, along with an adjustable rear spoiler and Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tyres, plus Brembo carbon-ceramic brake discs. Buyers can also choose from two seating options including a more comfort-focused GT seat or a Competition Sport seat, fitted with larger side bolsters for added support.

At the heart of the Z06 Convertible is the supercharged 6.2-litre V8, developing 625bhp and 861Nm of torque. Power is transmitted via an eight-speed automatic gearbox or seven-speed manual option, with an electronic limited-slip differential help managing the power.

Despite Chevrolet announcing its withdrawal from European markets by 2015, classic models such as the Corvette will continue to be offered in the UK but in left-hand drive only.
