Does not do what it says on the tin in respect of economy & performance!!!! The interior has no style at all and is more infuriating with the more time I spend in it. The ride is most unpleasant as a result of firm suspension combined with intrusive tyre noise and cabin resonance - anything other than a local trip is torture. The only good points are the very precise steering and excellent adhesion to the road. The model is a 1.8 TDCi Zetec Estate purchased to replace a company car - a 56-plate VW Passat 1.9 TDi S Estate. Considering the Focus is more expensive than the Passat on "new price", the VW trounces the Ford in every department, bar handling. Suffice to say that when the financial crisis is alleviated, a VAG-sourced model will be replacing the Focus as as possible! Lesson learned: do not buy on the basis of a short test drive (less than 20 miles) and car magazine reviews - take a 24-hr test drive and monitor the fuel consumption.

My Focus RS has been all I was hoping for and more, it is very easy to putt around at 30mph or it is equally at ease accelerating on to the Motorways. The cluch is light and progessive, the brakes outstanding and the performance is addictive. The insurance was much cheaper than I expected but I expect running costs to increase when the high performance tyres wear and servicing becomes due.
The seats are a highlight and I really like the sence of occasion this vehicle has. Overall I love it.

First ever Ford (in 20 years of driving) having bought new SAAB's, BMW's, Audi's and Nissan's (350Z's) for the last 10 years - all I can say is it went back to the dealership for servicing only, got treated like a mule, did everything asked of it and far, far more.

Just wished they (Ford) made a decent, faster replacement to the Focus ST2 like the Vauxhall VXR8 or Audi S4 I could buy in the UK (i.e. please bring the Mustang over)

05-reg Petrol, Owner for Less than a year

I traded down from an '06 BMW 1 series M Sport to my Focus estate, and have been pleasantly suprised. The 1.6 petrol engine doesn't offer performance on the same scale as the BMW, but does enough to keep me up with traffic, and get me out of trouble if needed. Car is extremely comfortable, easy to drive, handles well and is well kitted out in Ghia form. Overall very pleased, and would buy another Focus without hesitation.

Performance: 3/5 Braking: 3/5 Handling: 4/5
06-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

The Ford Focus was a car that did what it said on the tin, no more and no less. It looks average, was easy to drive and economical without too much performance compromise, but ultimately it did not compete with the likes of VW or Audi on quality feel or refinement. The Ford 2.0 TDCI engine sound was reminiscent of the Ford Transit Van of 10 years ago, much less refined than a VW Golf TDI of the same era for example.

Performance: 4/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 4/5
03-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Good handling but hard ride. Good performance and reasonable mechanical refinement. Build quality is solid but interior materials look cheap. Parts are cheap, but a number of small items (instrument panel, tailgate struts, door handle, stereo) have failed and the dealer service in fixing some of these while under warranty was very poor. In summary: good to drive but built down to a price.

Performance: 4/5 Braking: 2/5 Handling: 4/5
06-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Good, cost-effective, good-handling, well-built car with good comfort on the journeys I do. Never regretted it's purchase, but would probably buy estate next time as boot size not the greatest. Owing to diesel then gearbox not quite as crisp as the petrol version. Lowish depreciation and well satisfied if it continues to perform well. Reasonable torque allows low gearchange requirement.

Performance: 4/5 Braking: 3/5 Handling: 5/5
56-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

The Focus represents good value and is a most satisfying drive, with good performance which doesn't compromise economy (mine is the 1.6 diesel with the now (sadly) unavailable smooth ZF CVT auto 'box. In Ghia spec it is well equipped, and I would now always want cruise control, bluetooth compatibility, and parking sensors. All in all, very smooth, brisk and economical day to day transport.

08-reg Petrol, Owner for Less than a year

I think my ford focus st-3 is the best in its class. The 2.5 five cylinder engine is unbeatable, the performance is fantastic as it pulls hard throughout the rev range which is accompanied by a burbling engine note. The handling is amazing and will have you at the edge of your seat due to the amount of grip the car has through the bends. The interior is very pleasing and of a high quality.

Performance: 5/5 Braking: 5/5 Handling: 5/5
03-reg Petrol, Owner for Less than a year

I OWN THE ST170 , WHICH DOES HAVE GOOD HANDLING WHICH MEANS THE SUSSPENSION IS HARD SO FEEL THE SLIGHTEST BUMP WHICH IS EXPECTED. ITS NICE TO HAVE THE POWER TO USE TO OVER TAKE WHEN NEEDED BUT OVERALL IT FEELS A SOLID CAR TO DRIVE WITH NO SQUEAKS AND RATTLES,OVERALL AM HAPPY WITH MY CAR AND WANT TO GO FOR THE ST OR RS IN A COUPLE OF YEARS.

Performance: 5/5 Braking: 5/5 Handling: 5/5
55-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

I quite like the car. The handling is good and it is qite rewarding to drive. The main niggles that I have is acceleration could be a lot better and the engine can sound a little rough when pushed. Also not the quietest car around. That said it is a sound and safe family car that is dependable and comfortable for all on board.

Performance: 3/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 4/5
04-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Generally very good. The 2.0L Zetec engine is a bit sluggish and thirsty by current standards, but no other real issues. Fine handling, comfortable ride, interior still looks good. Over 45K miles it has been totally reliable, the only replacements have been routine service items and two front tyres.

Performance: 3/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 4/5
57-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

i like the car but the dealer-company are poor with customer relations. i think in the present climate car manufacturers should help more & not hide behind closed doors when you`re advertising there product. As a driving instructor i can pass on negative reactions to my pupils about these companies.

Performance: 3/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 4/5
07-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

It is a great family car, with excellent economy, however the larger diesel engines would make a better but! Servicing and other running costs are relatively low with absolutely no problems in the two years Ive had it! Would definately recommend it for its handling- absolutely fantastic.

Performance: 3/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 5/5
2004-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

So far, never failed to start, did need replacement suspension spring a couple of years ago as nsf spring broke slightly...never affected driving though. Much cheaper than my old citroen. It wasn't ever going to be a performance car. works fine with only a couple of people in it .

Performance: 3/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 4/5
58-reg Diesel, Owner for Less than a year

Good value for money but the build quality is a bit poor at times, the diesel engine is sometimes really slow to respond when driving around town and the brakes are poor. On the plus side, handling is really good, it's great for motorway driving and the car is well equipped.

Performance: 4/5 Braking: 2/5 Handling: 5/5
2001-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Never had a real proelm with this car and has recently passed mot with only required 2 rear tyres. Long journeys very good, but can guzzle up the fuel driving around town. Handles corners very well and preforms higher then I thought a car of this age would.

Performance: 4/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 3/5
59-reg Diesel, Owner for Less than a year

Its Great Love the focus and have been driving them for the last 6 years chaging 2 a year the only bad one I had is the current 1.8 diesel which is a terrible terrible engine its geared all wrong so swapped it for a 2 litre auto which is brilliant

Performance: 5/5 Braking: 5/5 Handling: 5/5
2008-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

(fingers crossed) no serious issues in the time we've had it. starts well, goes pretty well. Petrol consumption doesn't seem to be too bad. parts are better than some other manufacturers but still pricey. servicing is similar (ie good but pricey).

Performance: 3/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 3/5
2011-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

The car has performed faultlessly with only its annual service needed. Car insurance reasonable. petrol costs are high but that is market issue although mpg could be better. no spare parts have been needed. tyres wearing well - no replacements.

Performance: 3/5 Braking: 5/5 Handling: 5/5
57-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Quite a good car, excellent performance but heavy on fuel. The build quality is not quite as good as i would expect from a £20K car. Although I would consider buying another Ford I might also look at a more premium brand such as VW or Audi.

Performance: 5/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 4/5
X-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Overall an excellent car for it's age and still keeps up with a lot of modern cars in terms of it's looks, technology and performance. Will probably go on to buy a newer model due to being so impressed with the drive I have had from this.

Performance: 4/5 Braking: 5/5 Handling: 4/5
2009-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

I haven't had car that long but it has never let me down, but I took out 3 yrs warranty just in case. My insurance is not a lot as I am 50, as for fuel I expecteded car to be heavy as it is a rs 2.5 turbo. but I wanted this sort of car.

Performance: 5/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 5/5
2003-reg Petrol, Owner for more than 5 years

Apart from normal servicing and tyre and wiper replacements the care has been fine.it has carried some large loads & pulled a dinghy . Dvla & petrol costs are high compared with more modern cars, but it would cost a lot more to replace.

Performance: 5/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 5/5
57-reg Diesel, Owner for Less than a year

Good car, but the 1.8TDCi engine is difficult to pull away with in first gear (flat spot). The handling more than makes up for this once you get going and provides an engaging feeling every time you drive down country lanes.

Performance: 3/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 5/5
2011-reg Diesel, Owner for less than a year

Starts every time without fail perfect through the cold winter too. 500 miles off a full 45 litre tank is great value..my only out of pocket cost as everything else is covered by scheme insurance, tax, servicing, tyres etc.

Performance: 5/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 5/5
2008-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Had the car from 5 months old, never had a single issue. just one small gripe, headlamp bulbs don't last very long compared to other cars I know of. Servicing is reasonable, all other costs are as expected for a ford.

Performance: 5/5 Braking: 5/5 Handling: 4/5
2009-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Been pretty good, regular annual service and very few issues. Other than fuel, brakes been very good, still have original pads fitted, 3 years on, and still same rear tyres. also use k&n filter and nightbreaker bulbs.

Performance: 4/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 5/5

average econemy for a hatchback.comfortable and gives resonable performance for the uk roads, stands up well to todays demanding rod situations. i.m well pleased with the focus and i would buy another like it.

02-reg Petrol, Owner for More than 5 years

This has been the best car I have ever owned. Other than the brake pads the only thing I've had to have repaired are the wheel bearings. This car has been fantastic and I've had it 7 years

Performance: 4/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 4/5
57-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

In a word, the best car I have ever driven. Performance is absolutely staggering, lovely exhaust note from the 20 valve 5 cylinder Volvo sourced engine, looks great in orange, brilliant.

Performance: 5/5 Braking: 5/5 Handling: 5/5
2005-reg Petrol, Owner for more than 5 years

It has never broken down on road but cost of maintaining the car in good condition is increasing. Recently changed clutch return spring, renewed brakes and assembly, plugs and ht cable.

Performance: 4/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 4/5
W-reg Petrol, Owner for More than 5 years

It is nearly 10 years old with over 112000 miles on the clock and it still handles like new. 100 % reliability. Always passes MOT. Only money spent on it is tyres and exhaust.

Performance: 4/5 Braking: 2/5 Handling: 5/5
58-reg Diesel, Owner for Less than a year

An excellent drivers car, the diesel engine takes a little away from front end stability but makes up for this in other ways. Well built and finished with good interior.

Performance: 4/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 3/5
09-reg Petrol, Owner for Less than a year

One of the best, if not, best car I have ever owned. The Focus ST is the best hot hatch money can buy. Practical, safe, fast and a looker to boot - what's not to like?

Performance: 5/5 Braking: 5/5 Handling: 5/5
04-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

The Focus is probably one of the best handling/driveability cars I have ever owned. It is effortless to drive and very responsive. Reliability has been good to date.

Exceeded my expectations. Performance, ride and handling are excellent. The 1.8 petrol engine pulls strongly. Level of equipment with the Zetec model is good

Performance: 5/5 Braking: 5/5 Handling: 5/5
2002-reg Diesel, Owner for more than 5 years

Its been ok but had a replacement engine in 2009 and now needs a replacement gearbox. Diesel is mixed 50/50 with my own bio diesel so running costs are low.

07-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Generally a good all round car. Stylish and spacious.
Would have expected car battery to last more than 18 months and to have more than 12 months warranty

Performance: 3/5 Braking: 3/5 Handling: 4/5
54-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Overall a good car but have niggling mis-fire which comes and goes, possibly due to water getting in plug wells which was fixed but think has risen again.

Performance: 3/5 Braking: 3/5 Handling: 4/5
06-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Average car but good value for money as picked up a nearly new car (less than 1 year old) for half price. The performance and economy is acceptable.

Performance: 3/5 Braking: 4/5 Handling: 4/5
54-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Overall it is very good, only one thing is, it is very easy to stall the engine, I don't know if it is me or the car, never had this with other cars.

Performance: 5/5 Braking: 5/5 Handling: 5/5
