Supermarket Fuel

Postby dynamicddd on Thu Feb 22, 2007 9:14 pm

I didn't realise the connection until a friend of mine told me that the diagnostic light coming on the dash of several cars was caused by using supermarket fuel. This happened to me the other day. The car still drove ok, but the diag light remained on, (a rental car so no headache for me!). Before screaming blue murder at the dealership, ask yourself what fuel you've just filled up with perhaps....

I think years ago supermarket fuel wasn`t as good as major petrol stations fuel as it has less additives and that`s why it was cheaper, but i don`t think that`s the case anymore. So it should be the same fuel.
I`ve used supermarket fuel before and never had any problems with it.

Now that Tesco are in the news trying to deny they have supplied substandard fuel you can see the point I'm making is indeed valid. Obviuosly I'm not the only person that has had a problem with their fuel.

Whatever the cause of the breakdowns, this news will dent confidence in supermarket petrol. And not for the first time, either. The quality of petrol from these outlets has been the subject of rumour for years now.

I've heard rumours relating to the use (or lack of) lubricants and detergents as well as the basic quality of the supply. As a consumer I have no way of knowing if the rumours are or could be true.

If I buy supermarket own brand bread, I can see, feel and taste the difference quite easily. It's not so easy to do the same for petrol (yuck!).

I think AutoExpress should run comparison tests on various brands and types of fuel and publish the results.

I would like to know what I'm buying and I doubt I'm alone.

Come on AutoExpress! Let's see a comparison between branded premium and regular fuels and the supermarket fuels.

Supermarket fuel - You get what you pay for

Postby TrevorChenery on Thu Mar 01, 2007 5:17 pm

If you want cleaner engines, no hassle, better performance, improved fuel economy then don't but supermarket fuel. Whatever fuel type - petrol or diesel - that your car runs on such as BP Ultimate and the Shell equivalent will always serve you better.

Why do people take such a risk with their expensive purchases for the sake of a few pence per litre. It beggars belief.
