Consistently setting benchmarks for safety, refinement and comfort, the E-Class is the ultimate expression of the executive car. But Mercedes-Benz recently set about improving its million-selling executive saloon and estate car range. The result is the new generation E-Class. As you might expect, this new E-Class brings extensive technical changes, revised styling and new innovations, improving both safety and driving dynamics.
New suspension settings, a more direct steering ratio and gear linkage - on manual models - are collectively titled Direct Control; the result a more dynamic and satisfying driving experience without compromising on the ride quality. And there’s more power from eight engine choices on offer, too. Power and torque have grown, yet, as a result of constantly evolving engine technology, even with gains in power of as much as 26%, fuel consumption remains largely constant across all models.
Typically, with Mercedes-Benz, safety is hugely important. PRE-SAFE® now features on the E-Class. This pioneering anticipatory safety system works by recognising potentially dangerous situations, and priming the car’s systems to react appropriately. Gaining critical seconds in emergency situations, PRE-SAFE® uses information from the ESP (Electronic Stability Program), the numerous sensors within the car’s controls and the braking systems to best deal with any emergencies. Dramatically increasing occupant protection, PRE-SAFE® will pre-tension the front seatbelts, close any windows and the sunroof, while also moving the seat position to maximise occupant protection.
Adaptive brake, with Hold and Hill Holder function, makes driving both easier and safer. Brake Assist is also a feature of the new generation E-Class. It helps shorten braking distances in emergency situations, by applying maximum braking pressure. In addition, a brake drying function features in the new generation E-Class. Activated by the triggering of the windscreen wipers, the discs are automatically wiped by the pads, significantly reducing the brake response time in the wet and enabling shorter stopping distances. Flashing brake lights warn those behind of emergency braking, while a tyre pressure loss warning system also features on all models.
In a world first Mercedes-Benz offers its Intelligent Light System as an option on the new generation E-Class. This lighting concept has the ability to respond to driving and weather conditions to significantly improve safety. Not only does this new lighting system allow you to see further and more clearly than ever before, but also enables others to see you better.
With its new styling you’ll want to be seen, too. Enhancements to the design add to the feeling of dynamism while retaining the elegance traditionally associated with the E-Class. Its new grille projects a more powerful image, while the trademark twin-headlamp face is enhanced with louvres dividing the upper section of the main headlamps. Detailed changes to the rear lights, front and rear bumpers and the incorporation of sporting side skirts accentuate the sporting style of the new generation E-Class. Meanwhile the interior is enhanced by improved upholstery materials, a digital display, new steering wheel and eye-catching colours, as well as standard automatic climate control.
With four trim levels, saloon and estate models and eight engines, including the phenomenal E63 AMG with its 514hp 6.3 litre V8 engine, there’s an E-Class for every driver. But why take our word for it? Why not find out for yourself with a test drive?
