The safest Large 4x4 tested in 2012 was the Hyundai Sante Fe and it comes highly recommended. On the outside it looks thoroughly modern and it’s the same story inside. The option of seven seats gives the Santa Fe another string to its bow for growing families and, as we’ve come to expect from Hyundai, it comes loaded with kit.
Seven airbags and Bluetooth connectivity feature as standard, while the security of a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty helps to make the Santa Fe a safe investment, too.
From behind the wheel there are more dynamic choices available, such as the Mazda CX-5, but the Hyundai is comfortable and it gets a vast 516-litre boot. Both 2WD and 4WD versions are available, but there’s only one engine option – a 194bhp 2.2-litre CRDi diesel that provides decent performance and CO2 emissions as low as 155g/km in 2WD guise.
At over £30,000, top of the range models don’t come cheap, but lower-spec 2WD models represent good value for money.
