Tweet from the driving seat with Jaguar Land Rover's justDrive tech

Jaguar has revealed its new voice control technology that allows you to operate smartphone apps on the move

The world’s most advanced in-car speech recognition system, developed by Silicon Valley-based CloudCar, will be available in Jaguar and Land Rover models from next March. The justDrive app allows operation of messaging, navigation, social media, music and information functions via voice control.

justDrive works with JLR’s recently-launched InControl interface for Apple and Android smartphones, controlling apps such as Spotify and Twitter plus 17 others that include parking, news and internet radio apps. It uses the latest plain speech recognition software that will enable drivers to communicate with the system using more natural speech rather than a pre-set number of commands.

The tech allows owners to text or Tweet with commands such as "tell George I'll be late", run a web search through Google, or even ask for a specific song to be played through their Spotify account. Plus, if drivers request the best route, the navigation system will search through a list and check for traffic updates online.

All Jaguars fitted with InControl and voice activation can use the new feature, and the firm is hoping to roll out several new apps in the coming weeks after launch.

JLR’s director of research and technology, Dr Wolfgang Epple, told Auto Express, “We are working with CloudCar because they have the very best system in the world, and we’re first to put it into a car.”

“We want to enhance the driving experience, but we also want to reduce driver distraction.”

Jaguar Land Rover also used the LA show to announce the opening of its hi-tech Open Software Technology Centre in Portland, Oregon. The company hopes having a base close to tech companies on the West Coast of the US will give them an advantage when it comes to advanced infotainment systems in its cars.
