Position in the Top 100 cars: 18th

The latest IS racks up impressive results in the areas where a compact exec needs to excel – superb comfort, a cosseting ride and general ease of driving. Yet elsewhere the package falls down.

A lack of space inside is a problem, and we were disappointed with its reliability and build quality scores – they’re good, but not what we’d expect from a Lexus.

WINNER OF CLASS - Compact Executive

One of only two classes to keep the same winner as last year, yet it’s thrown up some fascinating results. The top pair of cars in the sector, traditionally dominated by German cars in terms of sales, are Japanese. Top of the pile is the Lexus IS. Its 18th position overall was enough to push it to the front of this competitive class. Some might argue the Accord should be in the family sector, but with the emphasis on desirability, not versatility, we’ve put it in here and it hasn’t disappointed. Third goes to the latest 3-Series, and the ageing IS still proves one of the most durable cars money can buy in fourth. Fifth is BMW’s 1-Series, which offers lower-cost entry into compact exec ownership.

Manufacturer Verdict (Position: 2nd)

It's the first time Lexus has had to settle for the runner-up spot, but it shouldn’t be too disappointed. Second is still a glowing testament to a line-up that features quality and reliability across the board.

besides the normal wear and tear, this car is fantastic. It still looks good after 10 years.
Whilst the running costs are not fantastic, nothing has gone wrong on my car other than the usual requirements of new brake pads, new worn out clutch and front bushes.
The only issue is that the alloys are corroded, which is a known issue.

The best car I've ever owned. I was a SAAB man for years until GM took them over. After two engine failures in 3 years I went over to Lexus and have never regretted it. The dealer and staff are excellent, polite, helpful and very knowledgeable. A courtesy car is always offered and the car is always valeted after service.

fantastic car overall, with all the toys you could want. The urban driving however doesn't involve you. In truth its bland to drive around town, but for motorway driving its comes into its own - Its smooth, confortable and quite

It is as reliable as Lexus are reputed to be and handles and brakes better than expected though the ride quality is not as good as expected. However, it is the best built and most reliable car I have owned.

Love it to bits. Only had 1 fault in 8 years which was a brake vibration. The dealer was unable to correct the problem. I rectified the problem myself. I had been in the Motor Trade 50 years!

Excellent luxury saloon. The only thing I don't like about it is that the parking brake is foot operated.

OK, but not as special as I'd hoped for the money. Servicing costs are astronomical.
