Japanese reliability is alive and well with the mazda 3. my car has done 83,000 miles with just routine servicing, which has impressed me with its combination of a sporty drive and engineering durability. my previous car was an unreliable and poorly built ford focus, so the mazda has been a revelation in comparison. areas for mazda to improve on future models are: 1) reduce the amount of road/tyre noise entering the cabin; 2) the ride quality is too firm over poor road surfaces which is more of an issue as the uk's roads deteriorate; 3) I have noticed some bubbling rust under the rear wheel arches, a common mazda 3 weakness; 4) interior quality lags behind the competition. The car hasn't gone wrong so servicing costs are kept low. fuel efficiency was fine in 2006 when the car was built, but fuel costs have risen sharply since then so improved fuel efficiency is important when I change the car.

Nothing has gone wrong in almost 5 years of useit goes through mot each year with just a bulb blown at most. As an auto it is not great for fuel, but it never goes wrong so does not cost to maintain. just the annual service, which I still get from a franchise dealer.

After only having the car for 4 months not too much to comment. but feels solid to drive and all components work well. I drive to work 3 times a week. and although I pay more than my old car to fill the tank, mileage is better.

Very dependable and no issues from new. Ł45 to fill the tank with 95ron unleaded gives apprx 450 miles driving around town in traffic. very reasonable for a family hatchback. servicing and parts very reasonable.

Excellent, reliable car. Starts first time without fail, has a bit of oomph when needed, practical and comfortable. The Sporty styling has attracted vandalism though - had it keyed on 3 separate occasions.

In 3 years absolutely nothing has gone wrong or stopped working - not even a bulb replacement. Relatively high by todays standards but I knew that when I purchased it.

Would be 5 (as nothing has gone wrong at all) but got an engine warning light false alarm. Excellent value for money (given what it is) but tyre wear slightly high.

Trouble free motoring. The only issue I have had is having to replace both front tyres due to wear inside of 10 months/13,000 miles.

Starts everytime - never miss fired or let me down. Nothing to say - only uses petrol, water for the washers & air for the tyres.

It would be great if the clutch didn't make such a noise. There is a distinct 'clunk' when a foot is taken off.

This car has never visited a garage for repair, only servicing. Main dealers are a little pricey for parts etc.
