It's a great little run around car. Even works well for long journey's. Recently drove it to scotland then the lake district and back from london and it performed beautifully! Coped very well in the snow and ice and gave plenty feedback to let me know when the the limit of grip had been or was about to be reached on the ice. Comfort was pretty good too. Five people in the car for most of the way - four people for the rest - and not a word of complaint about space. Only complaint I have is that my fuel consumption is fairly shocking, only giving me about 25mpg, where I should be running at around 42mpg. I think this might just be an issue with the engine management system not giving the correct mixture and have been quoted just under £60 to have it checked. Other than that I love the little guy - I've named him steve - and I think he'll be in the family for quite a while still.

Engine & gear box are very good and reliable, stearing had problems due tracking, garage stated after 3 visits this was the best the couls get the tracking too even though it wasn't quite right (car still pulled to the right). contacted mazda customer services who then contacted garage, then after additional 2 visits it was rectified. had problem with drivers seatbelt which was renewed by mazda, drivers seat the fabric was deteriorated and spounge was breaking up after 15,000 miles (2 years) garage said that it was only guaranteed for 1 year. contact mazda customer service who then arrangerd for seat to be renewed. Maxiumum motorway run is 37mpg & around town 31mpg. tank meant to hold 12 gallons (55 litres) when 0 miles on clock it only takes 41 litres.

Cost: 2/5
2010-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

The car paint is easily chipped by stones, worse than any other car I have owned. the drivers seat fabric has creased really badly after 15000 miles and has been replaced under warranty. Service costs are quite high and the car needs to be serviced every 12 months rather than 2 years for vw and audi cars I have previously owned. the cars computer is reading average fuel consumption of 42.2 mpg much less than the brochure stated, and even on a run it only goes up to about 46mpg.

Cost: 3/5
2009-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Mehanically the car is perfect and has never let me down in any conidtions. basically, it never misses a beat! For the power of the engine the fuel economy is excellent on good runs. however, it can drastically reduce when just 'knocking about' locally. I would give a 5 but for the not so good service intervals of 12500 miles making keeping the car serviced at the correct intervals a little on the expensive side with the mileage which I undertake.

Cost: 4/5
2010-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Has not let me down so far. fairly solid build (for the money), great little engine, low fuel consumtion combined with fast response and decent torque). I should be able to say more about the reliability after another 3 years. new car still under warranty so no much can go wrong, or should. Great mpg, low tax, low insurance. parts not to expensive although I suppose drivers will always moan about meintenance costs regardles how low they would be.

Cost: 5/5
2009-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Car is under extended warranty with mazda assist therefore even in the event of a problem (last year the turbo needed replacing) there is never a time that I would be without a car or stuck. Car is not expected to be as economical as less powerful ones however service bills with inclusion of tyres because the checks have identified they needed or would iminently need replacement etc have proved in the past to be costly (ł700).

Cost: 3/5
2008-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Had a lot of problems with it, computer a pain in the butt engine light kept coming on took 3 visits to garrage to sort it, then fuel filter blocked and broke down only months after full service!!! then found out garage did not upload service history to computer, had to ring and chase. Tyres were expensive and dont last long, also service very expensive and wanted to rip me off with a whole load more charges.

Cost: 3/5
2009-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Turbo failure left me stranded in wales for hours until the car got towed home. there has been a recall on the car, the wheels had to be replaced due to corrosion and several other build quality related isues. Bad on fuel and can only be run on premium unleaded. parts are very expensive, a new side skirt cost over ł500. expensive to tax and insure. needs servicing regularly.

Cost: 1/5
2011-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Never had any problems with the car, even through a severe winter. The fuel consumption isn't great but not terrible either. the tyres are expensive if you can find the brand - a lot of garages do not stock them. service charge was extremely high to replace oil and do general check. this could be down to the garage however I was told it was due to the components mazda use.

Cost: 2/5
55-reg Petrol, Owner for Less than a year

After having a basic Punto for the last 6 years( with nothing going wrong till the last 1 year) We wanted to have a car with style & quility ( & a cd player!)
And our Mazda 3 has not let us down, a super car thats not part of the crowd ie Ford, Vauxhall...A car thats its does its own thing.....
And the wife says its king of the road

Cost: 5/5
2011-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Everything does what it says on the tin. with breakdown cover and a regukar service plan, I can expect my car to serve me well. With low, about town mileage, I find the fuel consumption is higher than I originally thought when I bought it, although not that excessive. the price of fuel is so high that I try to drive economically.

Cost: 4/5
2009-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Just jump in the car use it as I want, aways starts cheap to run. never top up the engine oil between services. last time I put oil in a engine was 2002. Always run a new car in properly. then that all you have to do is put water in the w/bottle and check the tyres 43 mpg just replaced two tyres after 24500 miles.

Cost: 5/5
2004-reg Petrol

Have had the car 8 years and it has been brilliant - the only reason I need to replace it is because it is getting older and I need better mpg. Tyres are expensive and always need to be ordered in (mazda use odd sizes). mpg is not great to petrol costs are high and it is now in a high tax bracket.

Cost: 3/5
2006-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

1 problem to report years ago (esp/abs). nothing else. A bit thirsty. co2 162g/km (ł170/year) feels a bit outdatedmain dealer (who is also a ford dealer) servicing and parts are more expensive than similar ford focus in the same garage.good point is there is nothing else to pay for so far.

Cost: 3/5
2008-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

"touch wood" my car has been very reliable - just costly because it is a diesel and my mileage is high. Because of the mileage of the car there are a number of expenses which have been incurred sooner than would normally be expected and it is more expensive to run a diesel car.

Cost: 2/5
09-reg Diesel, Owner for Less than a year

Since I owned a mk1 Ford Capri in the seventies I have not enjoyed driving a car or felt as at home in the driving seat as I do in the Mazda 3 sport. I can honestley say that untill I drove the Mazda I thought the enjoyment I had for driving many years ago had left me for good.

Cost: 5/5
2010-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

No major issues in nearly 40,000 miles of driving. only issue has been wheel tracking and think that's down to the bad roads around here. Good mpg, a bit more would be better. servicing cost relatively high. spare parts costs seem good. brakes, discs etc lasting well so far.

Cost: 4/5
2011-reg Diesel, Owner for less than a year

Although I've only had the car for a short time, it has never let me down.the key is showing low battery which I wouldn't have expected on a car less than 2 years old. Find it really thirsty, but I think that's because I regularly drive at speed. this is likely to change.

Cost: 3/5
2012-reg Diesel, Owner for less than a year

Totally reliable since purchase. Mpg versus performance/ bhp seems fair. servicing costs when compared were middle of the road compared to other main stream dealers. also got fixed price service plan that saves well over 3-4 years. don't like the price of fuel though!

Cost: 5/5
2011-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

It seems to be very reliable. the start stop is a bit of a waste of time and had to be replaced as it failed. it starts and runs well. It's fuel consumption is poor, but that is about town. I get about 45 mpg on the motorway. still very poor by today's standards.

Cost: 3/5
2009-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

I am more than satisfied with this car it has been faultless in the last 2 years since I bought it, would highly recommend the car on reliability alone. The car is extremely economical easily returning over 60mpg on a long run, service costs are pretty average.

Cost: 5/5
2008-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

I have had no problems with the engine reliability since purchasing the car. It seems to have low mpg around town - doesn't quite match the figures I was told when I bought it. the only parts I have had to replace are the wipers and they were a good price.

Cost: 2/5
2012-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

It has not gone wrong, no teething problemscar is driven along country and bumpy roads and appears robust enough. Spares appear reasonably priced. 32 mpg for a 1600cc car along country roads may make the car more expensive to run that a lot of other cars.

Cost: 3/5
2010-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

My wife & l have had mazda cars each for the past 25 years and only ever had one minor problem. Apart from petrol and tyres it goes from service to service with no maintenance input, you cannot make it any cheaper. well satisfied with running costs.

Cost: 5/5
2010-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

No issues at all. great spec, good qaulity. As it is the top end model the spec is high and therefore the cost of running and maintenance. high octane fuel only, low profile tyres, paint finish etc but if you buy a sports car you should expect this.

Cost: 2/5
2011-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

Generally good but recurrent problems not permanently addressed ie weak tyre pressure sensors. Mpg and emissions are far lower than most rivals in its class, servicing costs are ok but replacement parts and mazda dealer labour costs are very high.

Cost: 3/5
2008-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

It's been reliable. just service and mot plus a couple of tyres and bulbs. after 5 years may change battery. No parts so far, and it's petrol so economy not as good as a diesel. it's more economical than my previous mazda 3 2litre sport.

Cost: 3/5
2011-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

I have had no issues to date this is my second mazda 3. I seem to be filling up more often with the 1.6 than I did with my previous 2.0 mazda 3 though the car tax is a lot cheaper and that was one of the main reasons for changing car.

Cost: 3/5
2012-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

The 1st car that I have ever owned (!st car in 1957) where I have had no cause whatsoever, to contact the dealer - ever. purchased 9 months ago. Not really a porblem as mileage is only 6,000 per annum and it is under guarentee.

Cost: 3/5
2011-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Never had a diesel before....oil consumption needs monitoring unlike last two petrol mazdas. warning lights two or three times come on for no reason. Spare parts expensive...had to have mirror replaced and cost nearly ł300!

Cost: 4/5
2012-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

It is as reliable as the previous mazda 2 and mazda 3 I have owned from new or near new, no negative views at all. With taking out a 3 year service payment previously and saving money that way it is cheaper than other makes.

Cost: 5/5
2009-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

I've been very pleased with this car and will get the same again next time. Recently the fuel consumption has deteriorated which I'm going to have investigated. not much has gone wrong so I can't comment on price of spares.

Cost: 2/5
2008-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

I twice had a problem with the electric windows opening while the car was parked & unattended, but that was repaired under warranty. I know mazda spares are comparatively expensive - fortunately I haven't needed to buy any.

Cost: 2/5
2012-reg Diesel, Owner for less than a year

Present car basically same as previous car. nothing went wrong in two years of ownership. Frugal. services only required. previous (identical) car achieved 92 mpg on hilly, twisting route at 37 mph average over 20 miles.

Cost: 5/5
2006-reg Petrol, Owner for more than 5 years

Only ever had to service it, replace one bulb, replace the tyres and re-gas the aircon. Nothing much to say. I have it serviced nowadays by an independent mechanic who charges a very reasonable price to service the car.

Cost: 5/5
2011-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

The car is very reliable, starts first time, no trouble with any components etc,. Fuel consumption is poor, the best we get is twentyeight twentynine mpg. have not had to buy spare parts yet. service reasonable priced.

Cost: 1/5
2012-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

Starts easily has heated front window cutting down time defrosting window. fitted with parking warning alarm. good quality drive with plenty room. Economic to run which is good due to fuel costs in this area.

Cost: 5/5
2011-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

No problems. the car is raced and rallied stands up to everything. still , with a wash, it looks and runs good as new. 1-2 tanks of fuel a month. nothing broken. cheaper than my old clio (smaller car) to tax.

Cost: 5/5
2009-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Nothing has gone wrong but one alloy was changed under warranty due to a bit of 'corrosion'. 33 mpg is reasonable considering its power. needed 2 new front tyres due to unequal wear across the surface width.

excellent car all round. performance is more than ample, ride comfort and build quality is great, economy is resonable for the enigne size as well.
to sum up excellent car all round and definatly recomended

2012-reg Diesel, Owner for less than a year

Worked perfectly over the past 11 months of ownership. Road tax very good, insurance good but expected lower fuel costs. considering the type of driving we do we would have expected around another 8 mpg.

Cost: 4/5
2010-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

It was off the road for a fortnight when it was 1 week old due to failed co2 sensor, parts were back ordered. Fuel economy could be better, servicing costs (ł300+) are high. ł85 for a pollen filter??.

Cost: 3/5
2012-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

As only had it for 9mths ok so far no know faults. I do own a mx 5 which has never let me down in 19yrs. Ave about 40 mpg around the town 57 + no a run up the motorway at 70 mph cheap tax ł135 per yr.

Cost: 5/5
2011-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

No problems - standard servicing only since purchased. Fuel consumption good for a 2.2l car. have had up to 59mpghave a service plan and have had no other expense apart from batteries for smart key.

Cost: 4/5
2009-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

Have had it for 7 months and other than a ripped tyre I have had no issues. Thirsty car, and also has to use premium unleaded so very expensive. tyres were expensive but to be expected on this car.

Cost: 3/5
2011-reg Diesel, Owner for 1 to 3 years

No mechanical issues to date. 20months. Spare parts can be a little on the expensive side, fuel running costs are 15.1 pence per mile, thats more an issue of fuel cost rather than engine economy.

Cost: 4/5
2010-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

This is my second mazda the first being a mazda 6 2.0 l diesel which I had for 8.5 years with minimal running costs. Although this is a 1.6 petrol model the fuel consumption is still very good.

Cost: 5/5
2012-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

Very efficient but of course still new. Heavy on petrol however I do now drive around town whereas before I had a diesel car and drove 130 miles+ a day of which the mejority was motorway.

Cost: 3/5
2012-reg Diesel, Owner for less than a year

I have always chosen mazda because they never let me down. I have total confidence in my car. Fuel consumption is excellent & I haven't needed to buy any other materials for it, as yet.

Cost: 5/5
2007-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

No major problems other than a blocked jet on fuel injection. Seems heavy on front tyres. reasonably economical but could be better for a 1.6 diesel. could do with a sixth gear, too.

Cost: 3/5
2010-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

Has not let me down over 3 years. Would like more miles per litre and for more mileage out of my tyres, I do a low mileage so I did not expect to buy tyres in the first three years.

Cost: 3/5
2012-reg Diesel, Owner for less than a year

Bit early to comment as I've only had the car for 5 months. Again a bit early to comment as I haven't needed any repairs etc but it is definately more economical than my old car.

Cost: 4/5
2012-reg Petrol, Owner for less than a year

Never had a problem with this or the last mazda 3 I had (for 3 yrs). Mpg much worse than suggested - even when feathering the throttle and coasting, nowhere near advertised mpg.

Cost: 3/5

Never gave it a thought - turns over first thing and goes. Expensive for labour main dealer 2 year service - yes I know my local man can do it but it was not possible this time.

Cost: 4/5
2009-reg Diesel, Owner for 3 to 5 years

Could always rely on the mazda, well built even down to the little things. Its a shame the car rating is or was not rated lower for co2 emissions so as to save on road tax etc.

Cost: 3/5
2010-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

100% not a thing has gone wrong with it. Fuel consumption is not good compared to other similar engines which surprises me for a 1600. emissions for road tax could be better.

Cost: 3/5
2011-reg Petrol, Owner for 1 to 3 years

No problems have been experienced to date. Disappoined with mpg performance, reflected in high monthly fuel costs particularly when compared with previous car -volvo c30.

Cost: 2/5
2008-reg Petrol, Owner for 3 to 5 years

It has never let me down and everthing works well. I know there are more economical 1600 cars around but this is secondary to our comfort and ease of driving our maxda.

Cost: 3/5
2012-reg Diesel, Owner for less than a year

It starts and runs well in all weather conditions. At the moment I get 44 mpg but on a long run that will go up to 54mpg, service costs are compariable to other makes.

Cost: 4/5

Never had a problem since we purchased it. Fuel economy is reasonable (although not the best on the market), service costs seem quite cheap, no spare parts needed yet.

No problems with reliability. Fuel consumption is extremely disappointing and compared with other makes, it comes way down the list as far as economy is concerned.
