The E-Class peaked last year, but posting an eighth place finish in 2009 shows it’s far from ready for retirement! With the all-new version due on sale later in 2009, the German executive class model has set a high standard for its successor to follow.

While it’s not the sportiest saloon on the market – 56th for handling is nothing to boast about – the Mercedes has an exemplary ride quality and the stopping power of a supercar. It’s a breeze to drive and superbly built, too.

A raft of efficient new engines should help the next E-Class to improve on the 66th place running costs rating of its predecessor.

The last of the previous E Class model. A very good car. Well built, stylish comfortable and economical. Spacious inside, cost effective and looks good. Dealer excellent, well organised and extremely helpful. Best car I've had and as it is used for business fits the bill perfectly. Would like to see MB bring out a long wheelbase E Class.

New E-Class 350D Sport. Superbly built with some very clever technology especially the fully automatic headlights. Wonderful engine providing awesome performance through a silky smooth 7 speed auto gearbox. Very comfortable and quiet cabin. Only disappointment is the stereo which for a £36000 car is not good enough.

good load lugger - starts on the button first time - ride somewhat too firm but accept in does have sports suspension!
Early niggles with boot lock - plastic mech tended to shatter!
160k miles - turbo still ok.
270 CDi Engine - still powerful - no smoke - no oil burn.

Good car overall, but a step backwards from my previous model e320 as the sports seats are uncomfortable and the grip from the 18" wheels is terrible in anything other than dry weather
