Mercedes E-Class Running Costs
Overall Average Rating: 89.23%
Position in the Top 100 cars: 8th
The E-Class peaked last year, but posting an eighth place finish in 2009 shows it’s far from ready for retirement! With the all-new version due on sale later in 2009, the German executive class model has set a high standard for its successor to follow.
While it’s not the sportiest saloon on the market – 56th for handling is nothing to boast about – the Mercedes has an exemplary ride quality and the stopping power of a supercar. It’s a breeze to drive and superbly built, too.
A raft of efficient new engines should help the next E-Class to improve on the 66th place running costs rating of its predecessor.
Your Quotes
“Beautifully built with pillow-soft ride and tremendous power delivery. More comfortable than an Audi, more elegant than a BMW and more roomy than a Lexus.”
Lee White, Witham, Essex
Manufacturer Verdict (Position: 9th)
Comfortably into the top 10, Mercedes has closed the gap on BMW. Third place for ease of driving and fourth for ride help, but the firm can improve on its 26th place out of 35 for running costs.

i have been driving and owning cars for over 65 years and drove an average of 30000 miles a year. had everything from a austin to bmw's. this car is the best I have ever had and bought second hand , have normally bought a new car every 12 to 18 months. the comfort, performance and mpg it gives are amazing. it now has 106.000 miles on the clock and feels just as good as when i first got it. i will only buy \another merc.

E class 350 CDI Avantgarde. Accelerator hesitation from standing start. You press the accelerator to join traffic and it can wait up to 2 seconds sometimes before anything happens. It is as if it is thinking what to do. Most annoying as my previous E class 270 CDI was OK. Ongoing. Mercedes to take another look after Xmas.

It's a beautiful, spacious, fantastically comfortable bus. It's very well put together and I'm proud to drive it. Plenty of power yet still frugal with the diesel. Servicing and parts are more expensive than I would like even at independant specialists. Useless in the snow! Love it.

Very capable car which has a good blend of performance with surprisingly good economy for a 2.2 twin turbo diesel engine. I am impressed with the overall engineering of the product after hearing about the pre 2006 facelift versions. It has been a great to own.

Very good fuel economy for the class. Expensive to maintain but high quality customer service. Rust has appeared on both wings and tailgate but replaced under long term warranty. No competition in terms of luxury practical estate and continental cruiser.

Great car - fuel economy is good given the 500+bhp on offer - consistantly returning 22 - 24 mpg. Nearly 150,000 miles now - I wonder if it's a record for an 2003 supercharged E55 AMG? Resale value is probably about £10 now though!

My car is a petrol E350 which makes it a bit of a guzzler but not too bad at 26 mpg. I only do 6000 miles a year so I can live with it.At last MB are back to making a solid reliable E Class. These cars are great value s/hand.

Very good - Mercedes service is excellent - but there isn't a cheap E class.
I've had Volvos & Saabs which were cheaper initially but their servicing costs were considerably higher.

Bit early to tell, but really happy so far. The new model, in my opinion, is not as good-looking as the previous model, which I owned. But the technology is brilliant in comparison.

Comfortable, practical, reliable and very economical on the motorway. Not sparkling performance, but acceptable for a heavy car with a diesel engine and auto transmission.

Very ggod comfortable car; to reduce servicing costs, I go to an unfranchised Merc edes specialist and then pay for breakdown cover with AA separately (still cheaper).

A very stately car. Does have a fair bit of power when you want to make use of it. Not that great on the economy. Road handling is pretty decent.

Not expensive to buy second hand, relaible, cheap to own because of not losing much on resale and things don't break very often.
