MINI's new Paceman revealed!

Countryman-based Paceman concept two-door SUV coupé set to take on the Range Rover Evoque.

December 2010

The MINI model range continues to grow at a Pace! The firm is readying Coupé and Roadster versions of the hatch, plus a new small model – and now it’s unveiled the stunning new Paceman in Detroit.

It’s based on the recently launched Countryman crossover, and shares that model’s platform. But the designers have given the Paceman a much more sleek and desirable shape as MINI gets ready to take the fight to the new Range Rover Evoque. And BMW's design boss Adrian van Hooydonk, confirmed that if public reaction was sufficiently positive it will make it into production.

At the front, a single black mask incorporates the radiator, foglights and air intakes. The grille has been redesigned, too, with a thick chrome surround, horizontal strips of light blue chrome to match the roof, piano black inserts and thin strips of brushed copper.

At the back, a narrow bootlid and rear bumper enhance the sporty profile. The short overhangs of the Countryman have been cut back even further by the removal of some crash protection, while the unique 19-inch copper-rimmed alloys are pushed into the corners, giving the newcomer a more dynamic stance. Blacked out C-pillars create an Evoque-style floating roof, while a subtle spoiler protrudes from the rear edge.

The jumbo brake lights sit horizontally – they’re vertical on the Countryman – while the housings curve around the back of the car. They flow into the shape of the bulging wheelarches, further adding to the impression of a wider, lower model.

The roof has been dropped by 20mm at the front and 40mm at the back to create the dramatic sloping effect. However, the blacked-out windows are more of a practical consideration, because the interior design isn’t finished yet.

For a show car, the styling is remarkably restrained, which hints at how close the Paceman is to production. MINI has also confirmed that the showroom version will sit alongside the Countryman in the range, rather than above it.

Under the bonnet, the Paceman will eventually use the most powerful engine in the current range: the 1.6-litre turbo with the full John Cooper Works tuning. This delivers 207bhp and up to 280Nm of torque to all four wheels. Lower power petrol and diesel versions would also be made available.

How anyone can compare the Evoque and a MINI is beyond me.
The MINI is not fit to be in the same showroom as the Evoque. When you open the curtains in the morning which would give you the most pleasure. The Land Rover Evoque of course.
NO CONTEST.

A joke too far

Hideous. Hopefully this will never see the light of day...surely bmw aren't foolish enough to think this hopelessly ugly chunk of metal will do anything other than ruin the rapidly diminishing quality of the mini brand? Evoque is in a completely different league.

Good grief!

Might look good on the Dodgem track at the local carnival but not in my street!!

Back to the drawing board

The side view looks pretty good and the back view is OK but oh dear, the front. The transition curves from the grille to the headlights are horrible. Worse than the frog faced Scorpio. Definitely a step too far for the Mini concept.

fight the new Range Rover Evoque??? are you seriously serious??

WHAT is the point of this thing?? Seems to me there is a lot of crossovers crossing over into non crossover territory!!! And the word Concept in MINI Concept, what is that all about, it should be moved on to MINI Conjure....... Tadaahh!

"Regrets, I've had a few..."

Methinks BMW may be having a few regrets about letting LR go...

BMW's handling of the Mini brand becomes more comical by the month. I'm thinking there must be near panic during BMW development meetings as they try to steer their monstrous ship through the choppy waters of the EEC's environmental laws.

Their main range is beginning to look out of sorts on the mean streets as many punters, such as myself, look for practical cars with smaller and more efficient engines. My Grand Scenic has a gem of a motor in the 1.5 DCi Turbo Diesel which delivers plenty of shove for overtaking and yet can pootle along all day sipping sparingly from its tank. It's comfortable too, drives like a car, not a van, is packed with toys and can accommodate my kids, their friends and enough luggage to keep Mrs S happy on an overnight excursion. Excuse me if I'm coming over a bit smug, but I have the best of all worlds with the Renault.

BMW's are all about status. Unfortunately for the German mark, "Times, they are a changing..." and they find themselves caught, like a rabbit in a spotlight, and they haven't a clue which way to run...

Vile.

I think with the front, they had Austin Maxi in mind, nit Mini (I refuse to spell it in all capitals).
The side view isnt too bad, and the rear looks like a bleary eyed startled dog.

Evoque style roof? PMSL LOL ROF LMAO!

The Ugly face of...

So is the 'Paceman' a 2 + 2 children or just a 2 seater? as: "The roof has been dropped by 20mm at the front and 40mm at the back to create the dramatic sloping effect" -

never mind the blue & copper 'strips' or cosmetic twiddling, - the front end is ugly & not cohesive - it looks as though the base vehicle, the green part, has been mounted on a 2 wheel trolley, the black part, to pull it in for the photographer.

Unfortunately, with the Detroit show only 3 weeks away, time is too short to do much with it - we shall see.

The side & 3/4 rear view is pleasing, & with a rethink of the front end will make it a good market niche filler, I know, I have one, a Meriva VXR...a real hoot.

btw, could you ban writer Bond & others from using the word 'stunning' - it has been thrashed to death by AE. -

keep up the good work of revealing the good, the bad & the ugly.

Mini farce

Are people seriously suggesting BMW are doing something wrong.... surely heresy in these hallowed halls of BMW sycophancy....
Everything they touch turns to gold.... or is that Baggs the Brand!
Overpiced, Over weight and Over Here.... its a Mini...

By dlwilson on 21 December, 2010, 12:21pm

Where's the sick bag?

What a moose of a car - the designer should have gone to Specsavers

By everton2004 on 21 December, 2010, 1:07pm

BMW must be delighted Auto-SUN-Express readers dont like it. Probably be a roaring success then!

By hampson10 on 21 December, 2010, 1:08pm

@hampson10

You are probably right, after all there are still a lot of stupid people about who believe all the hype... :(

By sgtgrash on 21 December, 2010, 2:19pm

I don't see where it will fit.

I'm considering moving into a 4x4 crossover type vehicle for my wife and although I’m very intrigued by the Land Rover Evoque amongst a few others, how can this be compared to it?

Pushing the brand too far maybe..?!?!

By srtyler on 21 December, 2010, 3:12pm

Wrong

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong
Once again, BMW are wide of the mark with their interpretation of contemporary packaging and styling. Look no further than Evoque and DS3 as benchmarks (and ask yourself how many 1 series BMW's you saw today). It's unlikely that class-leading dynamics will compensate for style in this market sector. It really is amazing how they can get it soooooo wrong

By david99920 on 22 December, 2010, 12:13am

DS3 vs Mini

It is obvious that the DS3 has mini worried it looks like a rip off of it

By Carmad3 on 22 December, 2010, 6:18am

Enough is enough! The Mini is a great car. The Traveller is just about OK. But the Countryman and this monstrosity just don't work.
Give it a rest BMW!

By Roger1709 on 22 December, 2010, 1:58pm

Please save us!

I hate the whole german Mini project. A cynical, not clever exercise. But these new spin offs like the Countryman and this thing just take your breath away with their awfulness. Poor Issigonis must be spinning in his grave. When will we get a thoroughly groundbreaking small car that changes everything that follows it - like the original Mini did.

By pajbse on 22 December, 2010, 10:52pm

To think that someone actually gets paid to do this!

VILE VILE VILE

What are BMW thinking? This car is nothing short of hideous, Honestly think BMW are RUINING the Mini brand, the hatch and convertable...i get it, but the Clubman, Countryman and now this, it's a joke!

Looks like it was designed by a GCSE Design Student with no talent!

Please BMW, this is just pathetic! The side profile looks hideous! What's that stupid leather door handle about! Honestly, I'd rather ride a good-looking bicycle than drive this! I'd be too ashamed!

By JTravolta77 on 31 December, 2010, 6:28pm

Perfect!

Mini and BMW laughing all the way to the bank!

By FlashGordon on 3 January, 2011, 4:16am

Who is designing these Bangers now?

Poor old Mini image - poor old Cowley plant - terrible designs! Students of several Technical Colleges in the UK could do much better in thier lunch break!

All I can say is that I hope at some stage the ghosts of Herbert Austin - William Morris - Alec Issigonis inspire some well to do knowledable Brits to finance and build real ADO15 Mins for the Generation Year 2020!
