LIVE: The new Ford Focus: Meet the family at Geneva 2010

Range promises to be better to drive than ever, and we have details on Ford's line-up in full.

Ford Focus Estate

By Sam Hardy

March 2010

It was a family affair for Ford at the Geneva Motor Show! The blue oval took the wraps off its new Focus line-up for the first time in Europe, headed by a global unveil of the Estate version.

The new wagon completes the range, which was first revealed at the Detroit Motor Show in January. It’s expected to be a huge seller, accounting for as much as a third of all Focus sales in Europe.

As you can see from these pictures, it’s a good-looking machine – with a sporty rising waistline and neatly styled tail that boasts some classy lights.

The rakish roof gets subtle rails, too. Like the rest of the line-up, the Focus Estate has the same front end as the model revealed at Detroit. And as with its sister cars, it will sit on an all-new compact car platform that is set to underpin 10 new Ford models, including the C-MAX. Ford promises that the Focus will be better to drive than ever and more comfortable. It features torque vectoring, which improves agility and stability, a new electric power-steering system and, for the first time, dynamic cornering control.

Petrol engines will come from the company’s new turbocharged EcoBoost petrol line-up, including a 1.6-litre four-cylinder delivering between 148bhp and 178bhp, as well as a high-performance 2.0-litre giving up to 203bhp.

A new 2.0-litre TDCi diesel motor is also due. This is likely to be offered in two states of tune, delivering 134bhp or around 160bhp. In time, the range will even spawn a hybrid, too.

The new Focus family

Focus estate
Not only will this be one of the best-looking carriers you can buy, it will be one of the most practical, too. The newcomer is likely to be even more spacious than its predecessor, with at least 500 litres of luggage room with the seats up, and 1,600 litres with them folded flat. There’s no word on prices just yet, but expect the Estate line-up to start at around £17,000. Sales will start in early 2011.

Euro Focus

Here's our first look at the European-spec Focus hatchback – and as you can see, it’s identical to the US model revealed at the Detroit show in January. The Focus sits 25mm lower to the road than the existing car and gets bold trapezoidal radiator grilles. At the back, the lamps are no longer mounted in the C-pillars.

There’s a coupé-like roofline, while inside huge leaps in technology and equipment are promised, along with hand-stitching for the seats and steering wheel. Entry-level editions should cost from £15,000, and sales will begin in early 2011. Ford is promising an ST hot hatch, too – thought to be powered by a 250bhp 2.0-litre direct injection turbo petrol unit.

Grand C-MAX
Even is definitely up for the C-MAX! For the first time, Ford has split the range, with this long-wheelbase model heading the line-up. It has seven seats and, to improve access, sliding doors.

C-MAX
Meet the most desirable MPV you can buy. This is the all-new second-generation C-MAX, and it arrives in Ford dealers before the end of this year. Sharing its platform with the new Focus, it was on display at the Geneva Motor Show alongside its seven-seater brother. Like its predecessor, it’s available with Ford’s neat seating system, which allows owners to fold the central rear one away, and slide the outer chairs for extra legroom. The seats also fold flat. Options include semi-automatic parking and an electrically operated tailgate. Engines include a 1.6-litre EcoBoost turbocharged petrol and 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre TDCi diesels, with the former emitting 119g/km of CO2. Prices should start at around £17,000.

What Happened!

What have Ford done to the Focus? When first launched it was new, dynamic & edgy, now IMO looks bland & boring.

The KA looks 100% better than this, modern/edgy.

The Focus appears to be going in the opposite direction, which is a shame!

Lets hope they don't play the same game they are alledged to have done with the new Fiesta and whack up the prices by over 30% in one year.

WHAT A SHAME!!!

What an ugly creature!

The design is definitely Korean, but the old-fashioned one, cause even they have learned how to do it.

The entire car has been inspired from Kia Ceed, but in an uncreative way. The front-end is very ugly and resembles of Fiat Stilo, a model from 15 years ago or so, who almost buried Fiat alive in their attempt to copy the VW Golf of that time. Plus a hideous moustache in order to be more aggressive. But the result is not aggressive, it's odd. The rear-side is an absolutely dull copy of the Fiesta one. As from the interior, it can be seen as a success only compared with the actual dated one.

So what has happened at Ford Europe? My first thought was that Opel or some other competitor hired some people from the inside in order to sink Ford. Until I remembered that this is a global car and has to please also the American tasteless drivers. So they interfered and this is the result. Unfortunately for Ford, in Europe people are more demanding on their cars design. The time when Ford used to be brave and creative seems to be gone. What a disappointment!

And Ford Europe was doing so well..

MEET THE ADDAMS FAMILY - THE END OF DESIRE

I have to make a remark about my previous post. Actually the car is a sort of mix between Kia Ceed and Opel Astra.

Ford tells us its willing to be pleased by the masses. The problem is that the car design contradicts the dynamic stance of the previous models and goes somewhere in between. It has no chance against the Golf and Astra and surely it won't be cheap enough to compete Ceed and Megane.

What is the point to address to the keen drivers with such a dull design or to the masses with high prices? Only to be nowhere in the middle. You have to decide what you wannna be. Otherwise you will fail miserably. Or, who knows, you will succeed in the US.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm

I'm not sure about it either. The hatch is just an enlarged Fiesta but without the stylish rear light clusters. One thing's for certain, have a rear quarter prang in the new Focus and the rear light cluster alone will probably cost you your no claims bonus. Ouch!

The estate? No, don't like that either very much. The profile looks just like a junior Mondeo estate and while the Mondeo carries it off ok, the Focus doesn't.

Sorry Ford, it does nothing for me whatsoever, I will NOT be buying one.

TEdious

What a tedious looking car. YOu say "As you can see from these pictures, it’s a good-looking machine – with a sporty rising waistline and neatly styled tail that boasts some classy lights. "

I say "me too styling that is no different from all the others"

By fellwalker2000 on 2 March, 2010, 8:50pm

All my expectations went to the dust, shame on you Ford

I expected this new Focus to be a wonderful, full of style surprise like the latest fiesta. Instead its all the opposite, its ugly, its soooo 2007...
It won' stand a chance agains the new astra, guilietta and the golf :(

KIA STAND AT GENEVA 2010

Yo, Martin Smith, go to your inspiration source, I mean the Kia stand and see the new Sportage. Just to know what to do with the next Kuga. Let's hope this time you'll do your homework better.

Styling

You know I think it would look much better, if they wouldn't have over designed the front grill with those stupid vertical lines (try covering them up with your fingers, you'll see what I mean) it completely ruins the entire cars styling, which to be honest looks like a mashed up version of different Ford cars from either side of the pond... Could be better, but think, when the MkII came out it wasn't entirely radical was it!!! let's just hope they don't make the new Capri (if it's ever coming) look too similar to this, which would probably be a much bigger disappointment to petrol heads (or as 'new Ford' would say, gear heads.)

By koupekid on 3 March, 2010, 7:31pm

Martin Smith, go back to the drawing table

Martin Smith, go back to the drawing table and redesign the car for preventing a total failure as you have almost an year ahead until the dealers launch. The Focus presented in Autoexpress some months ago was way better than this and was a Ford not something else.

Give us, the Ford guys, reasons to buy your car! Make the car appear like a Ford not a Korean crap!

REDESIGN

I mean the interior is somehow ok, even the back-side is eatable, but the front is hideous and unbelievably cheap. Resembles also to former Hyundai Accent. If we were to buy a cheap Korean we would go to Hyundai or Kia showrooms not to Ford. Maybe it's ok for the US, but for Europe it's certainly not working.

ARROGANCE

Well, the estate looks rather ok,muscular and sporty, although I bet that it will look very different and boring in entry level versions, with tiny wheels and stuff like that...but it´s no design benchmark in my opinion.
The hatchback is absolutely hideous and "kitsch",it´s a mixture of everything that exists in the auto world and fails to be anything!
It´s over the top! After growing up watching the first gen focus or the lovely old Ka,all these pictures fail to excite me...
And I bet the price will be over the top too!In Portugal, the fiesta for instance is one of the most expensive small cars available,we can have a new Polo for much less!
The world is going through a severe economical crisis, and the fact that a generic volume brand like Ford Is trying to make itself upmarket without any reason to do so,is an absolutely ARROGANT move...
Betch´ya Ford,I won´t buy this ugly, expensive car.And as good as it may be,we can get similar results for less money, and with higher quality.I just love a competitive segment! And I´m sure we will see Ford lowering their prices pretty soon...
Too bad!

I TOTALLY DISAGREE!!!

I have read all this comments about the new ford focus about how ugly it is,it seems like a korean car, about redesign, about it cant compete golf, astra, megane(?)or kia ceed(?).Have you see the car from close? If you see it you maybe take back what you said before...This car is absolutely stunning with all these new features and technology that no other car has in this segment.I remember like yesterday what we had said about the design of the first focus and its ugly rear lights. But after the first comments ford focus was the new car of the year a new best seller better in every way than the old fashioned escort. Now if you take the old focus(mk2) and put it side to side with the new focus you will see easily that the old one is like (i dont like this word but...)a BOX.Keep in your mind only 3 things that ford says for the new ford focus that it will have the best driving quality by far in c-segment,the best technology by far(see My Ford touch,Ford Sync,Driving Cornering Control,BLIS,Driver warning, auto parking etc)and high quality craftsmanship! One journalist from fifth gear said that the interiors quality is like a Lexus(!).I believe that after all these we have in front of us the next leader of the c- segment.

Hey, Kia giorikas81, his is not what a brain is for!!!

Well, actually, I worked for Ford and I loved the cars, you stu.pid mother- fu.cker. I'm just very disappointed of the Mk3, that's all. And, btw, I drive a Mondeo Titanium S. So, go to your mother , you imbecile, and beg for help dealing with your problems. It's clear for me that you are a Kia-type guy, love korean chicks, aren't you? Kia rules cause the herd you came from is huge, they are the most. That's why the kitch rules!

And I bet Ford is gonna wipe out your pockets with this kitsch, just cause you are so enthusiastic for nothing. This is what guys like you deserve to receive. Hasta la vista, you looser!

By addy_dy on 9 March, 2010, 5:45pm

Yeah right.

I drive a bmw 320d and a RX8 and a seat leon TSI and I am supposed to care about the new focus or your mondeo? Stupid asshole is stupid.
