French fancies are on the menu at Geneva. Renault has taken the
wraps off a Clio hot hatch bearing the legendary Gordini name, which
joins the Twingo 133.
To set the racy machine apart from the
competition, it boasts a wealth of standard features which go beyond
the Malta Blue paintwork and contrasting white stripes. In addition to
that traditional Gordini blue, there are three more exterior colours to
choose from: Pearlescent Black, Pearlescent White and Glacier White.
Unique 17-inch black alloys are fitted as standard, as is gloss black
trim on the bumper and rear diffuser.
For a little extra
sophistication, the Clio’s sports seats are upholstered in black and
blue leather, and the steering wheel has a racing-inspired white centre
line at its top. Gordini badging features on the gearknob and carpets.
The cabin is also crammed with standard kit which wouldn’t be out of
place in a larger car. Cruise control, keyless entry, an uprated
stereo, automatic lights and wipers plus climate control are all
included.
The Gordini is mechanically identical to the
Renaultsport Clio 200, which means it packs a rev-hungry 197bhp
2.0-litre engine, Brembo brakes and the standard sports chassis, which
offers a blend of dynamic abilities and comfort. For keener drivers,
the stiffer, lower Cup chassis will be optional.
The Clio
Gordini goes on sale later in the summer. Renault has yet to decide
prices, but expect to pay at least a £1,000 premium over the £17,481
price of the standard car.
The Twingo will be the first
Gordini model to arrive in showrooms. It goes on sale in May with
prices yet to be decided by Renault. Expect it to cost more than the
standard Renaultsport Twingo 133 on which it’s based, thanks to the
extra kit.
