Tata is set to bring battery power to the masses with the debut of the electric-powered version of its groundbreaking Nano. Just 12 months after the European unveil of the conventionally-powered car at Geneva last year, Vice Chairman of Tata Motors, Ravi Kant, confirmed the firm’s intentions to bring the Nano EV to market within the next three years.
The Indian firm will enter the electric car market on a small scale later this year, when it launches its four-seater Indica Vista EV. The Nano will use the same lithium super polymer batteries as the Indica, which will allow it to reach 37mph from rest in a rather sedate 10 seconds. However, this allows the Nano to travel 99 miles on a single eight-hour charge.
The Nano EV will go on sale first in the UK and Scandinavia, with other European markets set to follow. A decision hasn’t yet been made about selling the car in India. As to what it will cost, a Tata spokesman confirmed that the EV would be “price conscious".
