Fiat Freemont based on Dodge Journey

Geneva Motor Show debut for American-built Dodge Journey-based Freemont MPV.

January 2011

Fiat will show off the latest product of its tie-up with Chrysler at the Geneva Motor Show. Called the Freemont, the seven-seat MPV is a mildly reengineered version of the 2011 Dodge Journey which arrived at the LA Show last year.

The Fiat will be built at Chrysler’s Toluca plant in Mexico, where the US-market 500 is also assembled, and imported to Europe, although Fiat is yet to decide whether to bring the car to the UK.

The Fiat Freemont has seven seats as standard, and slots into the range to fill the gap vacated by the six-seater Multipla and seven- or eight-seat Ulysee, which were phased out at the end of last year.

Design tweaks from the Journey include new bumpers, a new front grille and LED taillights on the outside, plus tweaks to the dashboard, soft-touch materials and improved soundproofing are intended to add class to the cabin.

Fiat has also tweaked the steering and suspension for greater accuracy, and added a choice of powerplaints. Two versions of Fiat’s 2.0-litre Multijet diesel will be available from launch, with either 138bhp or 168bhp. Both cars drive the front wheels through a manual gearbox. A four-wheel-drive model will offered later, with the 168bhp diesel or Chrysler’s 272bhp 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol, both with automatic transmissions.

What a relief

The Dodge Journey was just the car I'll be looking for later this year, great price and doesn't look like Mum's car.

So I was rather disapointed to find Dodge were no longer importing it.

So pleased to see that the Fiat badged version doesn't look like a Fiat, but appartently will have Italian tweaked handling.

Let's hope it has a Fiat price too!

Can't see how this fits into the fiat family of cars. Guess it won't be long until Alfa is told to take part in this chassis sharing business with the American business. American cars have always had that cheap look and feel with sub-standard looks. Fiat although provides affordable nippy cars but they are much better than the American cars.

Let's hope it doesn't get Fiat quality to go with the badge.

Dodgee Fiat

Another pig with lipstick on!
Sticking a European badge on an American design doesn't hide the fact that its as stylish as a cardboard box.

Don't knock it until you've tried it

I hired a Journey last year in North America and found it was nice sensible large estate car. It won't take the place of the Ulysse or Multipla as the rear fold out seats are not suitable for full size adults for any great distance, the ultimate load capacity is not that great either. But as a smaller alternative for a full blown SUV with slightly more imposing looks than a normal estate car and some very clever family friendly storage solutions, I think that it is a usefull addition to the range. I would certainly consider one after living with one for a while. It didn't feel cheap or nasty, was easy to drive and easy to live with and is probably a better car for putting function above style.

Nothing new to see here

Side and rear window lines look awfully reminiscent of the previous-model Vectra to me.
Success will depend entirely on how cheap it is.

Damn It!

Just read that the Freemont is unlikely to be sold in the UK.

Are they deranged?

So fed up, I don't want one of those over priced and hideous vans with windows from Ford, Vauxhall, Renault, etc
