Hybrid Panamera mixes blistering acceleration with 30mpg economy

Porsche Panamera Hybrid

February 2011

Electric power has been mated to V6 muscle in the Porsche Panamera. This new saloon hybrid expands the model line-up to six and uses a similar drivetrain to the petrol-electric Cayenne.

It pairs a 328bhp petrol V6 with a 46bhp electric motor, which can either power the Panamera S Hybrid separately, or work in tandem to provide blistering performance – a sprint  from 0-62mph takes only six seconds, with a top speed of 168mph. That’s quicker than both of the conventionally powered V6 models.

In all-electric mode, the rear-wheel-drive hybrid can travel 1.25 miles, at a top speed of 53mph, before the V6 kicks in. However, Porsche’s hybrid system has the ability to switch off the conventional engine when coasting at any speed below 103mph, saving fuel in the process.

Combined with other green tweaks, such as low-rolling resistance tyres, the hybrid is expected to return 30.4mpg, and emit 159g/km of CO2, which means company bosses can write down the cost against tax. The S Hybrid will cost £86,146 when it arrives in showrooms in June, placing it just above the four-wheel-drive V8 4S, but below the £102,909 V8 Turbo, in the line-up.

Blistering Acceleration?

Since when has a 0-60 time of 6 seconds been considered "blistering acceleration" for a £90k Porsche?

MY wifes old Mazda 3 MPS did that and that was only £17k brand new, and isn't considered to be anything special.

Blistering............................... PRICE!!!

Come on Porsche who are we kidding here?.
£90K for a "hoped for" 30MPG, you have to laugh.
Lexus have "Blinded" some with their 'HYBRID flops" now Porsche are trying the same trick.
Any Diesel will provide those figures "EASY", and for a quarter of the price.

Blistering... Price... Lies!!

I agree with both the above posters! This is a silly price for a car that is less green than most others on the road! Hybrid cars are being sold to us as the "green" option, when in fact they are not!

If you take the whole life carbon footprint of any hybrid, manufacture of the car with both petrol/diesel engines, electric motor and batteries and then take something like the BMW 320D, the 320 wins hands down on it's green credentials.

Hybrids are way more expensive (A Prius from £20,000!!!) than a good diesel and although you save on road tax, that is more than taken up with the costs involved in servicing a car with two means of propulsion. And all that for being able to drive one and a half miles on electric power! Just a case of Toyota giving the cars to Hollywood’s finest and getting then to drive around in them!

Blistering or not???

The faster this car is - the better..... the sooner it is out of sight the better...... i have genuinely never seen such an expensive and down right ugly car. I saw some half wit driving a white one on the M62 recently.... the kids fell about laughing as it over took..... the car just dosent have a good angle.

Lot of Laughs

To be honest I have to agree with the above comments. Who ever thought this marketing ploy up should be shot at dawn. Why go to all the bother of designing a high performance GT like this only to ruin an already shaky image on hybrids. First Porsche produce a pug ugly body then to really finish the car off they produce a Hybrid that is slower than most Mopeds to 60. One has to wonder what they must be thinking or in this case not. Porche engineers must have better things to do surely. Of course £90,000 is just plain silly. It will be built well but so it should be for this obscene amount of money. It would take the average driver an awful lot of fuel to get through £50,000 of that and still have a very nice care at the end of it. Just get on with producing what you know best and some like (911) if you are inept enough to build and market something like this .
