Range Rover has cleaned up its act with a hybrid prototype version of its latest Range Rover Sport. The new car is one of a number of eco-friendly solutions that the firm is evaluating as it bids to shake-off its gas guzzler image.

Under the bonnet, the Range_e features Jaguar-Land Rover’s latest TDV6 diesel, connected to the eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox as fitted to the Range Rover TDV8.

The plug-in parallel diesel hybrid system means that the Range_e’s carbon dioxide emissions fall to 89g/km. The Range Rover Sport on sale now with the TDV6 engine emits 243g/km.

The Sport’s EV range is 20 miles, and the batteries can be recharged from a household plug, while top speed is 120mph. The firm claims that the car has a total range of 690 miles.

Range Rover will also show off three- and five-door versions of its new Evoque, and will confirm European pricing for the model; the Ultimate £130,000 Range Rover and the Black and White Landmark editions of the Discovery 4.

i reckon the tax man will eventually cotton on to all this 89g of CO2 if you can be arsed to charge it up v 243g if you dont.

why dont they do something clever like dump the 4wd drive system and power the front wheels with electric motors and some sort of flywheel charge system like the porsche 911 hybrid?

that way the city slickers can bumble around in rwd with electric for traffic and the country folk can have a vaguely efficient 4x4 vehicle

The headline CO2 figures are a cheat in any case

Like the economy figures, they're tested under laboratory conditions and the cars' economy devices, such as hybrid power and stop-start are tuned to maximise their impact in the lab.

On the road, my stop-start-equipped car is no more economical than a similarly sized car with a similar engine but no economy gadgets.

This whole hybrid thing is a gimmick from the manufacturers to lower the average fuel consumption of their ranges and avoid the punitive environmental taxes planned by the legislators.
