Bertone’s stunning Jaguar concept

Bertone 99 Jaguar concept hints at design direction of firm’s future BMW 3-Series rival.

By Richard Yarrow

February 2011

It’s a double whammy for Jaguar, with the debut of a stunning new compact saloon concept hinting at a future design direction and a replacement for the X-Type.

The deep red machine has been created by famed Italian styling house Bertone – but only after being briefed by Jaguar’s creative chief Ian Callum and advanced design boss Julian Thomson.

The result is called the B99, a name which draws together Bertone and the years since the company was first launched.

The 4.5-metre long D-segment car features barn-style doors leading to a minimalist interior of soft premium leather and brushed aluminum. Apart from the driver’s four analogue dials and the centrally mounted pop-up gear selector, everything is hidden behind high-gloss African wood panelling.

The only element of the car taken from today’s Jaguar range is the grille of the XF, but even that has been angled forward to give a more aggressive stance. The lightweight aluminium body shell features sleek, unfussy styling above large seven-spoke alloys.

Drive will come from a hybrid powertrain developed by Bertone Energy, the company’s newest division, but there’s no word on performance figures yet.

The B99 will undoubtedly be one of the star attractions at next week’s Geneva Motor Show. What’s more, alongside it will be a full-spec GT2 race version!

Bertone has not been chosen for this project by chance. It has history with Jaguar, and has previous created the 1957 XK150, the 1966 FT concept car, the 1967 Pirana, and 1977 Ascot.

Apology

I apologise for my recent miguided comments regrarding the recent Autoexpress renerdings of forthcoming Jaguars. Having seen these official Bertone images i now see how accurate the AE images really are.

Simply stunning!

This is the Jag that MUST be built! At last a Jaguar that lives up to its reputation as a sleek, low slung, sporty limo.

And there's going to be a GT2 race version - mental! Bring on the big cats...

Brilliant!

Congratulations to Ian Callum and Julian Thomson for having the courage to go outside their own design studio for this masterpiece. Apart from its sheer beauty the cleverest aspect is that, by keeping the details small, it looks much larger than it is. The challenge now is to put this car into production with as few changes as possible. Otherwise I for one will be hugely disappointed. I am saving already!

wonderful! beautiful! marvellous!

a modern take on the xjc and unmistakeably a jaguar, unlike the current xf and xj which look like "just another car"

By jrwales on 18 February, 2011, 1:42pm

Why?

If this was to make it into production, by the time they had turned the doors round, added headlights and a proper interior, is a previous generation XJ, or adding insult to injury, a slightly better proportioned X-Type. Its beatiful, however its too retro, they failed with the retro S-Type, X-Type and XJ, the new design direction as seen in the XF and the new XJ is the way to go. This would only make sense, as a coach built, opulent Daimler possibly a Vanden Plas, produced in small numbers , using components to keep development costs down

You seriously have to wonder why there are cars in production that AREN'T styled by Italians. Everything else is just knitwear in comparison.

By PedroConejo on 19 February, 2011, 4:50pm

Beautiful.

I drive a 95 xj and this car reminds me of it and so much more. This car is absolutely stunning. In my opinion this is better looking then all the Jags out. PLEASE LEAVE EXACTLY AS IS AND I WILL BE PURCHASING DEFINITELY. I always loved Jaguar and this is the perfect way for the company to go design wise.

IT IS NOT BEING BUILT

this will not be built in mass or limited production it is a design study that Jaguar will not take on, as it is not how the future products are being designed to look like, the facelift XF and the XE will have nothing on them from this concept and the future products will carry on where Ian Callum is currently deigning from, and that is NOT this

By jonboy4969 on 20 February, 2011, 7:12pm

jag have come out with some nice concepts, f-type, r-coupe, RD9, concept 8 based on the XJ. Some nice cars but none ever made it to production. i would hate to learn if the fate of this car is the same. I would prefer it was a Daimler myself. It is a bit retro and doesn't seem to fit in with the others cars apart from the grill, and that's a plus becuase it has its own unique character and feel which none of germans have achieved with their own range and it looks stunningly beautiful. lets see if this makes it to production after Geneva and how much of it they will take forward onto the real thing.

Party pooper

What an absolute killjoy jonboy4969 is!!!! I'll just have to build my own now!

By SprightlyBob on 22 February, 2011, 6:40am

Why not the next Damiler

The car looks too low for the X type market and I think too Retro compared with the latest Jags, however based on the XJ platform, V12 from their friends in Italy and you have a Damiler Double Six aimed at the Rolls Royce and Bentley.

Perfect for the streets of Moscow.

Looking Good .... Again

Yet another good looking concept from Jaguar but like many have already said will it make to production ? I doubt it .... which is a pity !

That said as much as I like the new look, the lights are too pinched for my liking and the wheels are too American by being chrome ....

I'm interested in seeing how Jaguar attempt to replace the X-Type and this for me is a step in the right direction

By Swiss on 22 February, 2011, 8:59am

Way too retro - wrong direction!

As much as I love the mark 1 XJ and XJC I think this is the wrong direction for Jaguar. It is far too retro, and the brilliance of the XF and new XJ show that a more modern take is the right way to go.

Now someone mentioned Daimler - build this as a big daimler double six coupe to beat the Mercedes CLs of the world and it's a different subject...

By bfgmartin on 22 February, 2011, 9:36am

The Legend lives on! Well done Jaguar and Jaguar

Like Seven-Up this wonderful Jaguar from Bertone híts the spot! Great can with wonderful styling! Now ensure the build quality is excellent and make it desirably exclusive and with the right colours.

By vandenplas4litre on 22 February, 2011, 9:57am

I love it, but will it make production, and if so unchanged? I am sure if it's as big a hit as expected at Geneva, the bean counters will have the sharpest pencils. Just look back at other Jag concepts that got mauled before production. If this is to replace the lowley X-Type it's got to be reasonably priced versus a BMW 3-Series. So don't get your hopes too high.

By desertrat2 on 22 February, 2011, 10:13am

The real one will be taller, with ordinary headlights

And will still look retro. But is that the right way to go? look at the success of retro-styled cars in recent years: PT Cruiser, MINI, Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang and the VW Beetle.
They sell because they look different to the mainstream and trigger a memory response with potential customers. Perhaps this is the niche Jaguar wants to follow as they find it too hard to compete with Mercedes, BMW and Audi.

By snappyuk on 22 February, 2011, 1:04pm

Retro is the new modern

It all goes to demonstrate how strong the original XJ6 design of the 1960s is. It has been reworked so many times yet the roots can be seen in the majority of modern Jags.

The renaming of Suicide-doors as Barn-doors seems to be very much the vogue amongst the manufacturers and one wonders why.

In London's black cabs it makes a deal of sense, as it is possible to walk to your seat; not something that is a feature of the cars that now employ them. A few years back rear hinged doors had a very bad press now after re-educating everyone want to use them retro has never been so forward looking.

By Townsman on 22 February, 2011, 7:34pm

That's more like it!

After the ho-hum aston-a-like XF and awkwardly proportioned XJ, this is more like it! This has Jaguar DNA but a modern feel.

They kept Ian Callum's hands off it, and I really like it!

By pajbse on 22 February, 2011, 7:56pm

Yes Yes Yes

Don't change a thing. I'll never afford one, but I'd love to see it on the road.

By akaalp on 22 February, 2011, 8:31pm

No big deal....

.... and no real improvement over previous XJs. I have just returned from Dubai where I saw the new XJ in the flesh. That is a stunning car. IMHO of course.

By jcrowley012 on 22 February, 2011, 8:58pm

Nice but not right for current Jag

It's beautiful and would have been very in-keeping with the design direction (and concepts) Jaguar were putting out a few years ago. It looks like a backwards step compared to the current XF and XJ, though. Jaguar have new-found sales success with these forward-looking designs (which are desirable and unique - Merc, BMW, Audi and Lexus have nothing to compare with the XJ's interior). The earlier retro direction probably wasn't inherently wrong - it was no doubt a good answer to criticisms of the XJ40 and XJ-S (in light of fond memories of earlier cars), but they somehow missed the mark with a lot of potential buyers and dragged Jaguar a long way down as a consequence. It would make no sense to return to that when the current designs are so successful.

Agree with the comments about Daimler. If Tata has the resources to put out new Daimlers in addition to new Jaguars then a design direction akin to this concept and pre-XF concepts could attract those bemoaning Jaguar's current modern designs. Have to keep it pure, though; it would rely on not being diluted by productionising.

Bellisimo!

Un coche sutilmente bello

By rosendo2 on 23 February, 2011, 4:51am

Gorgeous

I always loved the XJ Coupe. Always had a dream of getting one and doing it up Overhaulin' style.

With a Jaguar V12 bored out to a Lister 7 Litre standard and ZF 5 Speed gearbox, and the Broadspeed bodykit.

Painted in C / D-Type Dark Racing Green with a Red Leather interior.

Similar to the Steed's in the New Avengers.

If the do this as a saloon though, I agree with the comments about it being a Daimler Double Six.

Trident Tested

Put a Trident badge on the grill and you have a new Masarati... ;)

By sgtgrash on 23 February, 2011, 4:38pm

IMPOSSIBLE!

No way is this a BMW 3 competitor. Stop for a second and study the bonnet length and boot length. This is a mile long Luxury Limo not a 3-basher. If it is it won't look ANYTHING like this.
P.S. the front is pure Maserati, which is OK, but avoidable. See original drop-dead gorgeous 3-series rival.

By Tooyoo on 24 February, 2011, 12:40pm

Beauty is back!

If only this was an X Type replacement I'd come back to Jaguar. Unfortuantely it looks like a Mercedes CLS rival hence the reason Bertone have designed and the likely price tag.

By Steve_Bannister on 24 February, 2011, 1:19pm

Less IS more

Really like this. About time Jag bought the whole range into this centry, classy but not old fashioned, modern but not too OTT or fussy. I love it. Please don't change too much into production Jaaag.

By nickeroo on 24 February, 2011, 11:56pm

The Modern XJ Coupe

Wow

Just like the old 1970's XJ Coupe and up to date. Please Jaguar make it now and rub BMW's and Merc's face in the mud!

For once don't mess with the concept and build it, I would buy one.
