February 2011

Meet Nissan’s supercharged supermini! The firm has just announced the flagship version of the new Micra range – the DIG-S, complete with a clever new engine. The model features a 1.2-litre three-cylinder unit that’s boosted by direct injection and a supercharger.

What’s more, the unit features Millar cycle combustion, which delays the closure of the inlet valve on the compression stroke. In conjunction with the compressed, cooler air provided by the supercharger, this allows a high compression ratio of 13:1 to be used.

This benefits efficiency, because less energy is required in the compression stroke  and less is wasted as heat, while also delivering the engine response and torque equivalent to a four-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol unit. Particulate emissions are also way down on a comparable diesel-powered model.

As a result, the engine delivers 97bhp and 148Nm, while returning 68.9mpg and 95g/km, making it exempt from road tax and the London Congestion Charge.

The car will makes its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, and the first cars will arrive with customers in the summer. Prices will be announced closer to the on-sale date.

At last , some real efforts being put into the technical side of this great little car. If the build quality is as good as usual it should offer an unbeatable package if the price is kept down to compete with the little Fiat 500. The torque is what really stands out at over 140nm . That should make for a quick easy everyday driver. I just love the use of the much overlooked Supercharger technology in a small car. This and turbo's should really be standard practice to get the most out of these small engines. Believe it or not Nissan (Datsun) used to make a Supercharged Turbocharged Micra (March) a long time ago in Japan. A little rocket that was a technical masterpiece for it's time. One of only a few Supercharged and Turbocharged cars ever made. Well done Nissan.

The New Nissan Geriatric?

It's 2011 and Nissan are still producing cars that look as though they were designed in the 80s.
The only people who this car will appeal to are the over 60s.

Who cares?

With a car this ugly, who cares what it has got under the bonnet?

Nothing new

I've got to concur, there's nothing new in terms of design - though technically this car seems pretty neat. Now all that's needed is brilliant pricing!
