VW Golf cabrio is back!

Volkswagen lifts lid on top seller for the first time since 2002

VW Golf cabrio is back! front

February 2011

The Volkswagen Golf is roofless once again! These are the first official pictures of the all-new Cabriolet, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show.

Based on the underpinnings of the latest MkVI Golf GTI, the two-door four-seater features an electrically operated canvas top. This is raised or lowered in only 9.5 seconds – a process that can be performed when the car is moving at speeds of up to 18mph.

The newcomer marks the return of a model last seen in 2002, and is the first Golf Cabrio not to come with a permanent rollover hoop. Instead, it gets the pop-up system featured in the Eos that activates if the car detects it’s about to flip over.

It slots into the range beneath the Eos and will be joined by a convertible version of the new Beetle in 2012. To ensure the driving experience matches the sharpness of the hatchback, and remains free of scuttle shake, VW has reinforced the side sills, doors and chassis crossmembers. The stronger underbody has also been tuned to enhance refinement to the extent that bosses claim it “sets new standards for acoustics in a convertible”.

Spec choices are likely to mirror those of the current hatch line-up, while engine options are also being finalised. However, the Golf Cabriolet has been developed with six units in mind. Four petrols range from a 104bhp 1.2 to a 2.0-litre delivering 207bhp. Diesel fans can choose from a 104bhp 1.6-litre – returning 64.2mpg economy and emitting 117g/km of CO2 – and a 138bhp 2.0-litre TDI.

All but the 1.2 petrol and 1.6 diesel can be had with DSG boxes. The Cabrio will go on sale in time for summer, priced from around £20,000.

It's a good one

I knew VW wanted to bring this back. In my opinion, it's more of a baby Eos, but with the face of the normal Golf hatch and estate. Nicely done!

Will go on sale in time for the summer?! Good luck there then. I have a 5 door Golf Bluemotion or order and has now been delayed by 3 months due to factory parts shortage. Waiting 6-7 months for a car order is simply unacceptable, so would like to see how they are going to promise deliveries for the summer.

Nice girls bland car

Another boring VW, don't see the point when you got the Eos, seen plenty of women driving Eos's so Golf seems pointless.

A Cheaper Audi A3 Cabriolet?

Alright so this isn't the most exciting car in the world (far from it typical VW) but I can't see why anyone would now buy an A3 Cabriolet now unless you really really want an Audi badge, personally I think the VW group have kind of shot their self in the foot with this one but thanks anyway VW for the cheaper alternative.

I was liking this car until "ajjm65" mentioned it as a chickmobile, that for me and just girls in the car is a turn off.
