Volkswagen reveals styling house Italdesign's first concepts since being bought by the VW Group.

Volkswagen Italdesign concepts

February 2011

It’s a birthday to remember for Giorgetto Giugiaro! The legendary Italian car designer celebrated his birthday in style by overseeing the first VW concepts his Italdesign firm has created since the styling house was bought by the VW Group.

VW announced the first of two concepts to be shown at the Geneva show, a small three-door coupe called the Tex, which will line up alongside the Go! - a five-door hatchback.

The latter boasts a stance similar to Volkswagen’s Up! range of concepts, and hints at the look of the production Up! and the future of the Polo. It’s characterized by deep windows which incorporate plastic panels that act as a spoiler on the rear window and a perch for the rear-view cameras on the side.

The coupé model measures 3.99-metres long and could preview a smaller coupe that would fit into the range below the Scirocco and features the same rear-mounted spoiler. A newly sculpted bonnet helps to emphasize the Volkswagen badge, while a stripe of colour runs down the side of the car.

Both models feature a narrow grille and ultra-slim headlights, giving an indication of VW’s future styling direction for all models.

Definitely a Honda!

Looks like the VW design departments ran out of ideas!!!

vw Corsa?

there is something very vauxhall / ford about the rear end on both concepts - rear windows particularly and also the way the side windows duck down

Civic humped a Golf

robertyu1 is right! It looks like a the love child of a Honda Civic and VW's Golf

Must disagree with views posted so far.

Whilst I prefer Skodas publicised design direction, WVs new designs share Skodas stylised 'less is more' simplicity.
A welcome breath of fresh air after the increasingly over embellished current designs shown at their worst by Ford and Bangles BMW. The current design languages proliferation of pointles creases everwhere, gaping maws, and rising rears not only look dreadful, they also give lousy rear and rear threequarters visibility, whilst the ever steepening windscreen angles give A pillars which compromise visibility to the front.

When the new styles now being promoted become the norm, the styles of the last decade will be seen for what they are, orewrought, ugly and disfunctional.

Free surely!

I hope nobody got paid for doing these designs. If they did, somebody got ripped off.

Eek!

Go! - Honda at the front - Fiat Grande Punto at the back!

The 5 door Go! is very Citroen-ish or Peugeot-ish from the side and it looks like the old Isuzu Piazza has made a comeback with the Tex.

3/10 at Design School - Must make more of an effort. Consider a change in career to "Municipal Amenities and Garden Design"

Tex

They never did a 3 door version of the Austin Ambassador did they? .................. till now

Its old hat VW!!

Oh dear VW!, Why feel the need to copy a design for a car (Honda Civic?!?!) which has been around for the past 5 years. What we are seeing is nothing new, very dissapointing from a manufacturer that always seemed to have new fresh ideas in designing cars. I agree with above comments that we have a Civic/punto hybrid going on here and both these cars are due for new designs in the next 12 months!......Very lazy from the boys in Wolfsburg!....

Much better than reality

These are much better than the sheer dullness VW has been peddling for the last few years. The golf seems to be consuming ever more ditchwater with every new model. Whilst these are certainly very derivative designs, the certainly make more of an impression than the Magnolia Emulsion design's of VW. Though quit what all that fussy side window arrangement on the "Up" design is I don't know....

Morris Ital...

Besides, Ital Design did afterall come up with the Morris Ital though they never admit it these days. At least with the Morris they did use the Marina as a starting point, and that was a Morris. This is just a robbed Fiat Punto (which incidentally was a Giugiaro design also)
