The battle of the mega-SUVs is hotting up with the launch of the new Mercedes ML63 AMG. Making its debut at the
LA Motor Show, it comes with a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8, chassis tweaks and more aggressive styling.
The engine produces 518bhp and 700Nm of torque, which is 15bhp and 70Nm more than its predecessor. That means 0-62mph in only 4.8 seconds, as well as a top speed limited to 155mph. Yet Mercedes says fuel economy is improved by 28 per cent, to 23.9mpg.
Add the optional Performance Package, and AMG will liberate an extra 31bhp and or 60Nm of torque – taking the totals to 549bhp and 760Nm, and cutting the 0-62mph time by one-tenth of a second.
Four-wheel drive distributes 60 per cent of the power to the rear wheels, while recalibrated steering, big brakes and chunky anti-roll bars make it the raciest ML ever.
Expect to pay around £80,000 when the car arrives next year – that pitches the ML against Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo.
